The first round of Apex Cup season 2 was held Friday the 25th at the technical circuit South City Long with the TBO class.
Most drivers were going for the FXO Turbo with 3% restriction, in our pre-qualifying it showed that it was slightly faster compared to the XRT and RB4.
So it happened and not totally unexpected the top 5 drivers in qualifying were driving the FXO. T.Nogiec from CoRe Racing took the pole position with a time of 1:50.79, only 0.12 slower than his pre-qualifying time which was also set in the FXO. A.Jonaitis from Sonicrealms Racing and J.Basford from My3id Gaming completed the top 3 of the starting grid. While the fastest XRT driver, E.Chong took the 5th place with a time of 1:51.03, which was only 0.07 slower than the current WR.
The sprint race of 8 laps showed very clean and action packed racing on a high level. Only a few incidents occured in the back of the field. T.Nogiec who was starting from pole position had a good start and was able to drive a fast and consistent pace, which brought him a relatively easy win in the sprint race. A.Jonaitis was driving in second place until his front tires started to overheat, because of this J.Basford and M.Wentjärvi were able to pass him in the last two laps. A.Jonaitis finished 4th in the end while J.Basford took 2nd and M.Wentjärvi took the last spot on the podium. K.Leu from Concept Racing was one of the two drivers that drove the RB4. After starting in 13th place he managed to climb his way up to 9th, which gave him 2nd place on the starting grid for the main race. (Top 10 reversed)
The main race started with L.Mateja on pole after finishing 10th in the sprint race. With a slower start in the FXO he had to let 3 cars pass him who were driving in the XRT or RB4. It was K.Leu who took P1 after the first turn, with S.Cattell and J.Holmes from ineX Racing just behind him. S.Cattell managed to overtake K.Leu in lap 8 on the back straight which brought him the win in the end. J.Holmes made his mandatory pit-stop early in the race which gave him a free track in front of him. So he was able to drive a good pace and overtake K.Leu later in the race when he came into the pits. They respectively finished 2nd and 4th. T.Nogiec took 3rd place in the end after pitting early in lap 9.
In the drivers championship it's T.Nogiec who's leading with a 7 points margin over S.Cattell. ineX Racing is leading the teams championship with CoRe Racing and My3id Gaming behind them.
We look forward to round 2 which will be held on the 11th of March. The race will be held on Fern Bay Black with the Formula XR(FOX). Also this race we have live broadcasting including live commentating from C.Wilkinson, M.Golombeck and S.Plutta, don't forget to tune in at 18.00UTC!
