OWRL F1 2010: Wisniewski retakes the lead again after win at South City

Race number ten was held in sunset conditions at South City Reversed and yet again, just like last year Adam Wisniewski proved to be the one to beat at this circuit. After the eventful race two weeks ago this time he wanted to have a quiet race, which he got, at least in the last third of the race as Simon Cattell chased him down to the second pit stop, but then Wisniewski was all alone.

The qualifying showed two separate grids on the circuit as the top six with Wisniewski on pole next to Matias Pikkarainen were within one second and the other drivers in Q2 were already two seconds behind. But before the race even started, Pikkarainen suffered an electrical failure and had to retire from the race, so Quentin Benoît, who took part as current leader of the championship, started from second in front of Simon Cattell.

In these cars this not-so-dangerous turn one was a really dangerous spot at the start in last year as several drivers kissed the wall after suffering from the loss of downforce effect, this time however everything went fine through the first turns. 1stBFA driver Matthias Felix lost his fourth place to Michael Raymond and also Maciej Wójcik found a way past him, but he and Felix switched places soon after that. Wójcik was then in bigger problems as he fell down to tenth and after that he got involved in a heavy crash on the start-finish line. Dominik Engel, reserve driver for Sonicrealms Racing, got under pressure of Adrian Bakaj on the straight, but Bakaj moved too late out of the slip stream and hit the rear of Engel. Both spun and Rafal Czarnecki in his debut race for 1stBFA and Matt Maslen drove straight into both cars. Surprisingly only Engel, who flew high over the circuit, had to retire, the others went to an early pit stop, but seeing that the regular pit stops were already in reach, it didn’t affect their strategies that much.

The usual strategy of being out a few laps longer to get in front of someone else worked again this time. Wisniewski kept his lead, but now Cattell was behind him after staying out three laps longer than Benoît. Also Felix moved ahead of Raymond which was the start of a great battle between these two that went on or more than ten laps until Felix made a little mistake that gave Raymond the chance to get into fourth position. But it didn’t last long when Raymond suddenly went straight in turn nine and was lucky enough that the run-off area was directly in front of him, but Felix was away at that point and after their pit stop, Raymond’s times dropped significantly.

Before the second round of pit stops Wisniewski was just three seconds in front of Cattell, who drove the fastest lap at that time, but he was the one who pitted first, Wisniewski could stay out four laps longer. But before Wisniewski got to the pits, Cattell turned off the traction control at the exit of turn two too early and spun, losing ten seconds and possibly a chance to attack Wisniewski for the win this time. But even with his mistake he kept his second position against Benoît who couldn’t keep up with the speed of these two in the middle stint. Wisniewski could now cruise to the finish line, followed by Cattell and Benoît by twenty-five seconds, Felix and Raymond followed behind them. Wójcik worked his way back up to sixth and Matt Maslen finished seventh after overtaking Bakaj when six laps were left in the race. The latter went over the line as eighth after being the only driver with three pit stops in the race. And the final points go to Rafal Czarnecki and Ian Maslen.

After the race the marshals penalized Cattell with a time penalty for crossing the yellow pit exit line completely, therefore Benoît moved up to second and Cattell down to third. This gives Wisniewski in the championship standings a five-point edge over Benoît and with two races to go and six to two race wins, Benoît has to get past him because a tie in points wouldn’t be enough for him. Maciej Wójcik on third is out the title race, but he should keep an eye on Michael Raymond who is just waiting for a big push in the final races.

The Team Standings show Redline Racing still in front of Spdo Racing with now eighteen points, also the fight for position three between Sonicrealms Racing and Its All About Speed, who are just separated by six points, prove that there is no more room for mistakes. It is a bit ironic that the next track on 16th October is Westhill International, THE High-speed circuit in the live for speed universe. Just a little inattention and your race might be over, so a lot of excitement still awaits us in the final races.
