Wisniewski restores the gap to Marques in the 2009 OWRL F1 season

The sun was going down in the city when the tenth event of the OWRL F1 2009 series began. The race on the South City Long course in the reversed configuration turned out to be the longest of the saison and the low autumn sun made the the race feel even a bit longer.

The two-part qualifying began and after that, the ten fastest drivers would again compete for the pole-position. The current leader of the championship, Adam Wisniewski, showed early that this track is his district and got pole-position despite having the world record on this track. Carsten Hörenbaum and Martin Silhanek were behind him while Nelson Marques, Wisniewski’s biggest rival for the title only started from 5th.

The start is a bit tricky on this track with a fast left-hander and a bumpy braking zone before the first right turn. Everything went fine until the midfield reached the fast turn. Damon Ryder and Pedro Marques made contact and slowed down a bit. Pete Hopkins had to avoid both and spun off against the wall, bounced back and before he could continue, he got collected by Matt Maslen, who got a hit by James Dacre-Peace. Hopkins had to retire, at the front Hörenbaum misjudged his braking point and hit Wisniewski. Both continued, Hörenbaum with a little delay after getting spun by Sascha Zimmermann. Both lost a few places that led to the following order: Wisniewski on the lead, followed by Silhanek and Marques. Behind them was Sascha Rigler, who seemed to have a good stint and caught Silhanek and Marques within eleven laps. Wisniewski was at that point already ten seconds away and out of reach.

The strategy was a 2-stopper for most of the drivers, who were able to prevent damaging their suspension. The top-runners could do that, but it didn’t pay out for Silhanek, who had to retire midrace with a damaged suspension and technical problems. Wisniewski and Riegler stayed safely at the front, followed by Agari thanks to a fast stop against Marques. The latter had problems in his second stint and gave even the 4th place to Zimmermann, one of the fastest drivers at that time after being stuck behind Hörenbaum at the beginning. With a big gap behind were Speedfreak Damon Ryder and Stefan Piotrowski, guest driver for SK, fighting for seventh. Ryder was in front a long time with a stop less to do, but Piotrowski a bit faster.

Wisniewski and Riegler were still without opponents, but Riegler somehow had problems to get his tyres working and his laptimes dropped significantly. But Agari, who was behind him had other problems, because Zimmermann was coming closer and soon clearly visible in his mirrors. But Agari found his speed again in the last laps and after a few unsuccessful attacks he could drive away from his opponent. Sixth was Piotrowski, who could use the advantage of a light car against Ryder, ahead of Hörenbaum who had many contacts with the wall which made his strategy in vain with two extra stops. But no one was able to stop Wisniewski from his triumph in this race.

Wisniewski has won now every second race of the season, making it five out of ten until now. Marques scored only four points, therefore seventeen points behind the leader and now the only one who can steal the title away from Wisniewski in the final three rounds.
1stBFA is also leading the Team championship with twenty-seven points in front of Sonicrealms Racing. The eleventh race takes place at 10th October at the Westhill International circuit.
