AWS 2021 - Round 3
All-wheel-drive Winter Series 2021
Round 3

Monday,1st february
18:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET

After 4 years break AWS will return to the Rockingham, our favourite racing simulator's only real world track. And the return will be a repeat of the season final round of 2017 - the Rockingham 150,a 150 kilometer race on Rockingham's 1.5 mile oval with the street legal RB4,which brings the racers to some difficulties with it's tyres that are rather unsuited to high corner loads of the oval configuration. Rockingham's oval is a bit different to the ones known from US oval racing as it features rather short straights and +/-90° turns in 4 different variations.

As always in RGE's oval events there will be hotlap qualifying where drivers will be alone on track. The running order of qualifying will be decided from Drivers Championship standings - lowest placed drivers will start qualifying while standings leader will take his run last, entries new to this season will follow afterwards. Everyone will have to run 3 laps - outlap and 2 timed hotlaps, after which driver should spectate, only fastest lap counts of course. 2nd timed lap is optional - theoretically cars are faster in 2nd lap,but in case of a mistake, driver can spectate without finishing 2nd timed lap.

As usual,to avoid many questions,Race Green Events' statement about bumpdrafting:
"With closed wheels cars it is not forbidden, but in case of any reported incidents it will be treated as intentional contact,so everyone has to make sure that they know what they're doing!"

Defending series champion and winner of 1st round did not attend 2nd round, which made some changes in the championship standings. With this round half of the season will be completed and the situation in table will show tendencies in this year's championship, but with 2nd half of the season still ahead, plenty of changes still will be possible!

Round info:
Track: Rockingham Oval (RO3)
Laps: 64 (151km)
Car: RB4
Previous winners : DzidorisIII (2017)

Last sunday AWS visited Rockingham for the 2nd time and repeated the 2017 season finale - a patience consuming race with RB4s on the Rockingham's oval. This race was all about balance - balancing the car's setup between grip and durability, balancing car's handling between oversteer and understeer and also balancing own racing pace between fast and consistent. At least series organization was not called to balance between driver's chances to keep racing in the league and clean racing as there were just few rather minor incidents, which stayed under radar.

Just like 4 years ago, also in this edition of Rockingham 150 there was someone who was able to deal with this combo better than everyone else - Dzidoris again was the driver to beat and celebrated his 1st win of this year and broke the tie for all time most wins in AWS - he is now the sole winningest driver with 8 racewins. His teammate Falcon was able to get ahead to lead 1/4 of the race, but could not keep up the pace and had to concede the lead, still 2nd place and a good handful of points earned. Current standings leader R.Kardol could not challenge for win,but also progressed during the race by 1 position as he overtook his teammate, polesitter of this race and defending champion Botsi, who finished 4th.

Situation in championship standings deffinitelly got more interesting now - R.Kardol still leads, but his lead has been cut down to just 3 point by Dzidoris. Defending series champion Botsi is now 3rd,but already 13 points behind, which means that simply dominating the remaining 3 rounds will not be enough if R.Kardol keeps finishing 2nd. Another 3 drivers are within 20 points gap to table lead.

Fatass did score just a single point in this round, but still was able to increase his lead in Rookie of the year standings - Twincam is 2nd now 7 points apart,Doni follows him with same points gap.

This was also 2nd of 3 rounds for RB4 master award and the situation in the table is even tighter than in overall standings - R.Kardol leads by a single point over Dzidoris,Falcon is 3rd with 7 points gap to leader. Defending RB4 Master Botsi is already 16 points behind leader and his chances to defend it are rather theoretical. This award will be decided in round 5 in Westhill's support roads course. This round was also 1st of 2 Oval trophy rounds - Dzidoris leads the table by 3 points over Falcon. Also here the award's defending champion's chances to defend the title are as small as Trespasser did not attend the 1st of 2 rounds. Decision for Oval trophy will be made in 2021 final round at Kyoto oval.

Also Teams championship is getting more interesting - defending champions RGA were able to cut huge chunk off the gap to leading team S1dus. Just 5 points gap between top2 teams, while rest are quite far away and most likely won't play a direct role in championship decision. Situation is even more exciting in Nations Cup table, where defending champions Lithuania took over the lead in table and is now 1 point ahead of previous leader Finland. Also here it will most likely be a duel between top2 as 3rd position Netherlands is within striking distance, but R.Kardol is currently only points scorer for his nation.

4th round will be the series origins round - FXR race in the Blackwood's rallycross track. Seeing current developement trends,Race Green Events will stay with the ruling about using the latest stable LFS version - currently still without "right" tyres for FXR.
