FPS on the grid!
Hello!

Is there a way to increase the FPS when I'm on the Full A!-grid
(I usuallt start at the last place)
For the moment it's around 7 FPS so it makes the starts very difficult

In the race with no cars visible it gets up to 20 FPS or so...

I have tried a lot of different settings for graphics,
dither, User LOD, halftextures etc...

but it's no difference at all, not even changing to 800x600
will help...

My settings for the moment is 1024x768x16
and I have a Intel P4 2.2 Ghz and Geforce 6600GT

TIA
(does the 6600gt have a power cable going to it???)

check the power cable to the card is pluged in

the power is plugged in....

I suspect the physics for 11 AI is rather tough too, maybe
that is one reason, I hope it won't be the same problem if I'm
in a multiplayerrace...

I would to hate to create a mess because of bad FPS...
options -> misc -> minimum sleep. what value is it?

also try it online (sit in someones car and watch the start from the back of the grid)
#5 - Rolle
minimum sleep is 1, I can't set it to 0

watching a multplayer was about 16 FPS at the back of a approx 8 car grid

I just tried a start in GTR and starting last with 16 cars
I had at least 25 FPS.

But I find it very strange that when I tried 640x480 in LFS
I still had the same low FPS and I have USER LOD down to 0.40
but no difference either

I don't have vsync on, and no AA or AF either

If GFX changes like resolution have no effect your system is CPU bound.

There are some multi player speedup options you might want to look at but cant rememeber where. I think these limit the number of cars you see etc.

Might be worth a try.
people with less of a system get better fps.

try turn off all software (ctrl alt del and have a terminate spree. just dont kill the needed processes )
Also try 32 bit graphics, may sound odd but that 6600 wasn't designed to run in 16 bit mode, especially if your desktop is running 32 bit.

Chris
There must be something wrong indeed. I have 50+fps with my old 2600+ and a 9500 with AA and AF enabled. Have you upgraded from a Ati card to the 6600gt and didnt remove all of the old drivers properly?
Also make yure that the power cord to the 6600gt comes directly from the psu with no other devices connected to it.
I guess your FPS should be about 30 at start and 80-100 with no other visible cars...

I only had a 6600Gt for 2 weeks, but the LFS performance was worse than with my 9500... Maybe its fgx driver related too.
The graphics card is surely not to blame here. I have a 6600GT too and run LFS at 1600x1200 with 8xAA and 16xAF, and I still get 60-90 fps in a normal race, a bit less when having the whole grid infront of me.

The main thing that LFS depends on is raw CPU power because of all the physics calculations. If you play offline with a lot of AI's then your CPU is even more stressed because it needs to calculate full physics & driving actions for each car 100% of the time, while in MP the driving actions are done by the players (obviously) and far away cars use simplified physics or no physics at all if they aren't seen on your machine.

Whatever, I'd expect some more fps from your 2.2 GHz CPU. Either there are some driver problems/quirks that hinder your CPU dramatically, or whats more likely, too many background programs eat your CPU time like cake.

Also, if your CPU supports HyperThreading; turning that off is reported to make LFS run quite faster.
Good first step to boost FPS is turning FSAA and and AF off...
Still it seems strange, that you get so few fps with hat rig. Try the good ol' ctrl+alt+entf and look what process eats up processing power. (The performace should state less than 5% usage, when you do not run any programs). Then try to disable any ressource-hoggin task.

Sorry, but no. FSAA and AF don't make any difference on that graphics card. His fps are purely CPU limited.
What about system memory? What speed/how much does this guy have?

Also- the CPU is really slow.. He should upgrade it to 2.8 or 3Ghz (or as fast as his mobo can handle) to get all he can out of the GFX card.. it is horribly mismatched. 6600GT is a pretty quick card.. 2.2ghz Pentium for games is really slow. (My 2.2ghz Athlon is about as fast as a 3Ghz Pentium in games)..

The gfx card isn't THAT important but:

After formating my hard disk a couple of weeks ago I forgot to install my chipset drivers, thus I had no real agp support.
Just noticed that the oher day via AIDA 32 and after installing the chipset drivers I got a massive +20fps in LFS (with an ati X850 XT!).

Maybe worth a shot.
Yeah he should update all his mobo and gfx drivers for sure..

Plus uninstall the gfx drivers.. Start windows in SAFE mode and run driver cleaner..

Then restart windows normally and reinstall drivers.

thank you all

I have the latest drivers 77.77 and also 1 GB of RAM
I think I have a rather good idea on what is running on my
cpu, it's usually around 33 processes, mostly svchost.exe

and when running LFS in window I saw that LFS uses 80-93 %

I tested my computer at pcpitstop and it was not much wrong there,
nothing that would matter anyway...

It's just in the starts where this problem occur, and that makes it a big
problem of course...

A teammate has fps at 17 or so, with similar hardware,
and I guess many of you have better as well...

(in hotlap-mode it's above 60)

will the LFS-benchmark shed some light on this?

my current settings are
1024x768x32

sounrs like a processor problem i have the same thing
Rolle---

Goto START/ RUN/ type in "msconfig" without quotes.

GOTO startup tab..

How many things with a check next to it? I have 3.

If you have a LOT more- make a screenshot, or list them...
Format it! :P i had better fps in my 2nd pc with a 2000xp/ ati 9500 64mb(softmoded to pro)...
put z buffer depth up to 24
Quote from dUmAsS :put z buffer depth up to 24

Yeah I noticed that too- forgot to mention it.
What does the "z buffer depth" do. I have ok to poor frames on a 2.5 P4 with 8 mb onboard graphics. I assumed 16 would be better. Would I do better with 24?
thanks again for your help, still the same though , but some tracks are better than other...

in msconfig I can see that those processes starts:

qttask quicktime I guess
nvcpl rundll32.exe, nvidia something?
nwiz.exe nvidia again?
services.exe in windows folder
rundll32.exe bluetooth something
nerocheck
zlclient zonelabs
nvmctray nvidia again?
ctfmon
profiler for saitek
fraps just fraps
msnmgr
adobe reader speed launch
certificate mover
microsoft office

I guess some of those could be shut down, while racing
once I tried to increase LFS priority, but that made no difference either

Thanks again!
Depending on how frequently you use some of that tools, I would turn off:
fraps
msnmgr (if you use the msn messenger then leave, obviously)
adobe reader speed launch
microsoft office

the last two only affect the loading time when you want to use ms office or adobe IIRC.
