Turn Monitor Into A TV?
ATM i have a crappy 17" LCD generic TV, hooked up to a Scart-outputting cheap Freeview box.

I have a spare 20" LCD monitor with a VGA input - ideally i'd love to use this hooked up to my PC and using media centre, but from my experimentation this never worked too well (poor signal etc).

Is there any (cheap) way of plugging my Scart freeview box into a VGA monitor?
Search the interwebs for a scart to VGA convertor?

Thought you were brainy Jack?

...I tried that, but I thought it might rape the quality, and also £5 is a lot to pay for a cable (esp as my Chinese suppliers dont stock it full stop).
I used an old USB TV box thing a while back, plugged the PS2 into it and it looked fine. No quality loss or anything, so I can't imagine a simple cable to do any different, especially as it doesn't have to go through the PC first to get to the screen.
Fiver, dear for a cable??

Try buying a top of the line HDMI cable!
AKAIK if your monitor supports a horizontal scan rate of 15.625khz then it's possible to DIY yourself a cable up to do it, but if not then i think you're out of luck...
Some smart people who know what they are doing may very well be able to scrap together a DIY-scart/vga converter.

So no, you can't

E: Damn you GFresh. Beaten by several minutes.

Dont know if u know that but HDMI just includes audio, overall its just as good as DVI is.

If u got any brainiez then why not making one converter urself. I could get a datasheet for u. Seen few people doing it themselves in our countrys tech forum.
I have A pc monitor with a scart in the back and HDMI and loads moar tv type connections.
Even for old fashion cable tv.

Look up LG flatron its a great screen.

I dont want a new TV, i'm more than happy with my 17" one, but as I have a 20" better LCD on the floor I thought I might try to use that...

£5 for a cable is a lot (at least for a cheap one).

Digital cables like HDMI are about £2-£3 for normal lengths, and as they are digital assuming they conform to the same standards expensive cables give you nothing extra...
well yh i use the top top end very lightly, basicly all this gold plated rubish, which can cost you 40 odd quid last time i knew, especcially at the lieks of pc world and associated companies, £5 for a tbh specialist cable that arnt produced in the same sort of quitities of comon cables isnt that bad
if your freeview works already, get a Hauppauge Nova-T (usb freeview). i have one and it works a treat. i pause live tv, record 2 channels at one time. i didn't even install any drivers. win7 looked after that bit.
it's more than £5.

£5 isnt much for a cable on retail pricing.

On cables carrying an analogue signal good quality cables can make a difference.

Even on digital signals however cheap cabling can be more prone to interference, although tidy cabling and no loops in your excess will do more than better insulation on the cable can. Also cheaper cables are often less sturdy and don't stand up to repeated unplugging and reconnection.

If you look at the SCART standard you may notice something odd, they support multiple standards... Scart cables just carry an SVHS signal + audio, but cheaper ones sometimes only carry a composite signal + audio which is less wires - meaning cheaper materials - and as such give a much lower quality output, so again, cheap cabling isn't always the same.

I don't have an HD setup at this time, so I use gold connectors on thickly insulated cables for my composite connections, and i'd have done the same for my SVHS connections too if I could have found them anywhere when I was getting cables, and you can be sure all my scart cables are carrying SVHS and not composite too, and are thickly insulated. Quality can cost a little extra, but it's worth it.

You make no sense, if you don't want a new TV why are you trying to use a PC Monitor as a TV? If you had a TV then you wouldn't need to convert a monitor to a television. It would make more sense if you said, I don't NEED a new TV but if you didn't WANT a new one, then you wouldn't want to convert from your original existing TV setup.

Your an idiot.

I have a TV, it works, but the screen is badly marked, the viewing angle is poor, etcetcetc. I also already have a 20" PC monitor on the floor I have absolutely no use for at all, however it's a good quality screen.

I dont want a new TV, as a new TV is £150 for a tiny shitty one, and I dont watch TV enough to make that worthwhile, but if I already have a screen then turning my monitor into a TV could potentially cost a few quid then it's worth it.

Yes, it can, but on the distances i'd be running, and the quality of the existing components it certainly wouldn't make a difference worth worrying about.

Yes, i'm sorry that the key signs of immaturity and "being a bitch" is trying not to spend money needlessly.

From the research I have done the cable probably wont work - it needs to be an "active" converter. Might just chance it for the sake of a fiver though.

What else would you suggest?

I could just go and buy a 32" TV, I could afford it but it wouldn't be that good for me at all, because I don't watch TV enough to justify £350.

I fail to see whats so bad about not wanting to spend money needlessly?

Christ alive I only on help for a f*cking cable.
if you replace a tv with a monitor, what are you going to do for sound?

Freeview box has SPDIF out which i'm sure I can adapt into 3.5mm connectors. I have an old set of Creative P380's i've been wanting to use with my TV anyway as the speakers distort like crazy.

Wow! You have one of the bigest e-pennis I've seen for so long
You might be an incredible human being
Jakg, I don't know if your handy with a soldering iron but you could try something on this link.

I did the component to VGA for my home theater and it worked a treat. The only thing I would suggest would be to use shielded lead to stop a little interference every know and then.

Im not telling you to go out and buy a new TV but as it looks the cable is the thing you need but your umming and aaring over a fecking fiver saying its expensive for a cable. If its what you need for the sake of getting TV onto your monitor then buy it. Everytime you buy something its like reading the bargain hunt script only they aren't as tight lol
