As a demo user you can only test 3 cars anyway, and AFAICT all three come pretty close to their top speed on the BL1 straight.

Yes, I've always found it more fun to drive along on my own on a straight track than to battle against other people on a track with corners.

The dragstrip is quite long as well, but probably not long enough for what you're after.
