Greatest Rock Guitar Solos of All Time
As we're all racing fans, I guess it's safe to presume we all enjoy some good-old rock-and-roll at least every now and again.

So, which rock music guitar solos are the best? :bannana_g

Please link to a youtube (or similar) vid of the solo, so we all know what it is.

My nomination:

Telegraph Road - Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjJzlIedCuo (solo section only; the whole song is like 10 minutes long)
on the dire straights theme i personally think the start to money for nothing is great but as great guitar work goes angus young takes some beating
A recent addition and quite a simple structure, but it just sounds sooo good, and in the right circumstances brings a tear to my eye.

2:15 - 3:26.

Machine Head - Aesthetics of Hate
Guns n' Roses - Sweet Child o' Mine.
So hard to pick my favourite Randy Rhoads solo, he was simply awesome. Such a tragic loss of one of the most talented guitarists ever to walk the earth.

I could pick many of his fine moments..i'll go with this one.

The full song live, solo kicks off around 4.45 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxcQ9Rs487o&fmt=18 In my top 5 favourite tracks of all time.

I don't know what it is about that guy, but his playing sends shivers down my spine. If only he'd been given another 50 years on this planet.

Surfing with the Alien by Joe Satriani

Yeah, and the last YouTube comment pretty much sums it up.
"this what happens when chuck norris looks at a guitar "

Firstly, congrats to samjh for an inspired topic!

Joe Satriani has to feature, and I agree that Surfing With The Alien is indeed an epic.

On the same album, one of the most emotional pieces of music I've ever experienced was Always With Me Always With You. The solo, being Satriani, runs from the beginning to the end of the track, but the "solo riff" just blows me away every time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4fPv450OYM

I know it's "solos" but I don't think that Steve Vai and Ry Cooder's "duel" in the film Crossroads can be excluded! Positively the best PAIR of solo guitar assaults ever!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeq6r9oISe0 - If you don't know this one, YOU MUST WATCH IN FULL (or else!)

There's a stack of classics rushing to mind now, so I reserve the right to post more epics..
I don't think you can call this "greatest of all time", since he is still quite young, and not really "famous" (well, on youtube he is), but i always thought Mattrach was quite a genius when it comes to guitar playing and solos...

MattRach reminded me of another awesome solo guitarist.. Stanley Jordan. I've only seen him play live once, at a high school in Buffalo Grove, Chicago. Absolutely brilliant artist.

I'm not a huge fan of just quick shredding - the faster you play, the more bad notes you can hide

That said, one of the best solo guitar pieces if you feel like a challenge, is Steve Vai's Eugene's Trick Bag from the movie Crossroads. But I prefer the more actual melodic work of tracks like Erotic Nightmares or Satriani's Surfing With The Alien album.

posted above.. but it was Ry Cooder that did all of Eugene's bitz

Maybe up until the final duel, but the last one was Vai playing both parts

Ahh.. looks like you're right. Ry Cooder did all the slide guitar and blues parts for Eugene but the rest of the duel was Vai - including the Paganini bits.

Vai plays the acting part brilliantly too. Awesome

Dire Straits, period.
