how do i play .avi files on my comp i have windows media player but when i click on the avi file it don't show the picture just some kind of abstract thing... help

No image (just sound) tends to indicate you're missing a codec. Most likely DivX or XviD

Don't bother with that worthless piece of shit WMP. Get VLC Media Player, which includes a codec pack already.

I have a problem too (with WMP).
When I want to watch/listen to movies/streamingthings, WMP says ready (or something), but when I press play, nothing happens!?

Try to use VLC or Winamp

The best method is Media Player Classic (or equivalent) with ffdshow.

But VLC will do just fine if you aren't planning anything special
