overall, Gary Moore of Thin Lizzy... played and out-done any and every guitarist... been around since before Hendrix and still going strong... rory gallarhar is a god too but haven said that carlos santana is good... doesn't play enough notes though... always seems to be holding back...
How about Steve Lukather (Toto)?

Must admit I haven't heard many of those mentioned... looking forward to hear them some time.

Yes, he's the greatest of all times for me.

Also I always liked:
James Iha, he made some incredible guitar solos for the smashing pumpkins.
And the edge from U2, just for his guitar solo in "The Fly"
No John Petrucci ?

Gotta admit him and Joe Satriani are my faves, I love guitar solos <3

Sarge
Eric Clapton and David Gilmour.
or Eddie Van Halen
Well Slash is up there with the best (with GnR), although though not the longest carrier admittedly. And what about Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman. So many good guitarists :headbang::bannana_g
Yngwie Malmsteen at least deserves a mention. He was too much of a one trick pony to be the greatest of all time though.
okay, sorry but i dont agree that steve vi jo sta. or jimi hendrix were metal

Hendrix was quite unique, true. Steve Vai's predominantly a shredder although some of his sideman work has been interesting (Zappa, PiL) which suggests he's not as stuck in the narrow metal rut as most of his contemporaries. Satriani, on the other hand, is neither use nor ornament.
Hendrix, of course...
Me

Really Slash could quite possibly be one.
most old school shredders ( joe, hendrix, vi ) all do blues too, just people only here the metal and therefore that is wot they are known for.
anyone got comments for the links i gave?
