Quote from ssm :(I didn't want to get an actual British Roadster because of the rumors of "British reliability")

There is nothing wrong with "British reliability" Our cars are better than yank crap anyway. Stick with Jap and European cars. Dont get an American car though, he wont get around corners lol.

Which British cars would they be then?
Seriously, stop complaining about the cost of insurance in the UK.

Yes it's high, we all know it's high. It doesn't matter what car you have, you can still kill people - just the other day in my area 4 people were killed and a man paralysed for life after some pricks in a 106 had a head-on.

Sure you can say 'I'll never speed' or 'I always drive carefully', but insurance isn't individual is it, it's based on statistics. That's the way it is, and will be for the foreseeable future.

I know people who've had MX5s as first cars. My car was OK as a first car (Fiesta 1.6 16v), General Lee (forget your real name :schwitz has a 316 as a first car. It's not impossible to get something OK as a first car, as long as you're prepared to shop around and then pay for it.

Anyway a couple of years on (ie when you're 21) and things become very reasonable. In fact I'm looking at a Lotus Elise as my next car (have fun while you can n all that, don't have a family to lug around etc), and insurance isn't unaffordable. It's less than it was to insure the Fiesta for the first year, put it that way.

Yes, my friend who did Internet Marketing with me gave into the pressure and got a Camaro for 600 dollars...

I would never get an American Pony Car... Although I would want to get an "American Exotic" Something like a Viper ACR or... mmm that's it...

But like... if I got an MGB or a Frog Eyed Sprite... I don't think I could live with the interior or the 4 speed... or the breakdowns...

When I was purchasing cars, I had several criterias...

Cheap and within budget... 3k
Light, around a ton...
Livable interior...
Reliable...
4 wheel independent suspension
4 wheel disk brakes
5 speed manual

That narrowed down my selection to: Honda CRX Mk2, Toyota AW11, and NA6CE

all of them are excellent autox cars... but only the Miata has decent interior...

The AW11 was a little too dated and kinda scared me off with it's 80's space age interior

And the CRX is hard to find in decent condition... And ones with 4 wheel disk brakes are rare. (I can always swap Integra rear brakes into it, but I am too lazy to modify it)

I would love to save up for the Lotus, but the thing is.. some simple luxuries are needed.. I don't know how people get those as daily drivers...

I might want to look at a diesel 3 series before I move out next year...
Drums on the rear aren't necessarily a big problem, depends how much you use them. For track use then no, but for road use you probably won't have big overheating issues.

edit: Yer I'd only have the Lotus as I would keep the Fiesta, no point selling it really, just drive it until for as long as possible I think. The Lotus is going to require of LOT of saving, but I'd be getting an S1 as there's no way I can afford an S2. But still, plenty fun enough I'm sure
In terms of insurance, those statistics are one of the best reasons to visit local companies as well as using the big guys. I actually got a great quote (undercut the previous lowest by £200) from a company that specialises in Japanese and modified cars and they were recommended by the owner's club - they're far too small to appear on price comparison sites or anything.

But a local company might be happier to taylor a quote specific to you than a national company would.

I am doing AutoX locally.

And I can't have multiple cars, as I am going to be moving out...

Good luck with saving for the Lotus... I want a Honda so bad...
That's a good point Dajmin. It's also worth nothing that some companies will give you a discount for being part of a members club.

I know some people get discounts for being in the Ford RS owners club, I guess it shows you care about your care and aren't likely to smash it up given the first opportunity.

Similarly the insurance on my dads kit car is very low, presumably because they know it takes 12 months to build or something, and that you aren't going to drive like an idiot potentially wrecking all that work.

So... if I build a 400 bhp drift Silvia, would I have low insurance rates?

Not sure why danowat thinks it's not possible for a MX5 to get 60miles to the gallon. It's quite possible, where is Tristan when you need him!?
#487 - ssm
It is a ton, and with hypermiling... yeah...

Hell, I can squeeze 100 mpg out of my mom's Volvo S60... for a few moments (according to the gauge...)

Then when I go crazy with the throttle, it drops to single digit MPGs...

And that S60 is diesel?

Because I am a realist

Nope, Just coasting down a street in neutral or going down a hill...

Quote from danowat :Because I am a realist

Woah! Be careful with that word!

You just called me a delusional retard.

You can hypermile with any car if you drive, you will just be very dangerous to other drivers, and would annoy the hell out of everyone.

Well saying you can get 100mpg when you're going down hill with the clutch disengaged isn't really telling the truth is it? It's not over a set distance or "to and from" journey so therefore just irrelevant statistics.

Oh, btw, the S60 is automatic... (I never knew they made a manual S60..)
Quote from ssm :Oh, btw, the S60 is automatic... (I never knew they made a manual S60..)

Well it doesn't matter, because you weren't doing a journey you're just going down a hill and looking at your trip computers MPG counter trying to get the numbers as high as possible. And of course they make manuals for every car, you just have to be outside of America to know that (unless it's an american car of course.. :P).
#494 - ssm
Okay, well, I got the average mpg up to 38 mpg on the Volvo.
My trip says 999.99 mpg when going downhill, does this mean my car does 999.99 mpg?

I am talking about avg over a tank of fuel.
#496 - ssm
If you do that as much as possible, and you go uphill on a first gear going so low that the engine might knock, you might be able to boost that average mpg really high.
Quote from BlueFlame :Not sure why danowat thinks it's not possible for a MX5 to get 60miles to the gallon. It's quite possible, where is Tristan when you need him!?

No, it is not. And I have tried to no avail. Then I stopped driving like a tard and started enjoying the car (which means less MPG obviously). The MX-5 should not be used as a fuel-efficient mode of transport, simply, because it isn't.

My trip computer also says that. Except it's 99.9, it doesn't go any higher D:

Also, if I get to a decent speed and let it roll it will go very high. However, my average on the trip computer is 23mpg.

Well, the Miata shares the weight specs Displacement vs Weight of many econo cars... (I hypermile to offset my environmental guilt about racing...) So I am just a dangerous driver all the time...

Btw, It's time to go to school here... (6am) and it's a snow day!! YAY! I get to f - around for the day!
