I just want to know what setup most of the LFS racers use. It is more aimed to the new Intel Core 2 duo and AMD Dual Core.

I always go with AMD processors these days, although I was a Pentium man back in the day.

I don't have a dual core yet (no need, I usually only do one thing at a time), but I just upgraded to a board that supports it for future upgrades

There is a probably quite wide range of different computers within the LFS community..
Anyway I have AMD Sempron now and if you are buying a new computer now Intel's Core 2 Duo is the way to go.

Want to buy a new pc or do an upgrade next week and I have always been AMD fan.

My current system is

the two choices I have is

AMD 4200+ AM2 2.2Ghz

or

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13Ghz
Intel Guardfish DQ965GF
Gainward Bliss 7300GT 256mb
1024mb DDR2 667Mhz

I'm not looking at manufacturers, but the prize / quality -ratio instead. Before this dual core -era AMD64 (especially Venice core) was the spot-on, but today Intel Core 2 Duo gives the best value for your money.

Of course you can buy a (lot) slower one for less reasonable price if the brand is so important...

Yeah I am not to worried about the manufacturer but I just want a pc that gives me the best performance and value for money. At the moment the Intel setup will cost me in ZAR. R5790.00 and the Amd R5150.00

Intel setup is better, but the graphics card is rubbish!

Im an AMD man (as for me i already have a decent 939 mobo and ram), currently on a 4000 (@ 2.7 GHz), and will be going to a 3700, which i hope to overclock to at least 2.8 GHz, my next upgrade would probably be an Opteron 165 (Hoping for 3 GHz!)

What is so rubbish about the GFX card? B4 I go out and by it....

Understand your point but the 7600GT is double the price here in South Africa.

I'd go with the intel atm, but i would drop down to a e6300 and overclock it, then put the savings toward a better GFX card like Jakg suggested.

I know, but if your getting a card such as a 7300, then the Intel and AMD rigs would be the same performance as either one will be held back, sure, you could upgrade later when you can afford it, but you won't be amazed by the PC's speed in LFS, as it won't be much quicker...

What about a 7600GS? are they really expensive? It might be worth getting the Intel rig, and then getting a new GFX card later, but if it was me i wouldn't bother and would save up till i could get a 7600GT....

Okay, I worked it out. It's about $140 more for the 7600GT. So yeah, I am going to look at that option.

Get the E6300 and overclock it. These can easily hit 3 Ghz with good cooling and RAM.

if your overclocking on a shoe-string, grab a E4300, higher multi means that it can overclock to x frequency with a lower FSB, and thus with a lower quality mobo and RAM

Just don't Absolutely Count on 3.0GHz. A lot of E4300's seem to max out on Stock Voltage around 2.6-2.8GHz (there are ones that do 3.0+ though), then it takes a Lot more voltage to go higher. Granted a C2D @ 2800MHz should be enough for anyone, but if you are dead-set about getting 3+GHz, you need to think E6300 or higher. The percentage of E6300's that do 3.0+ just seems to be a lot higher than the E4300s. You would save some on DDR2 667 vs the ram you need to OC the E6300.

If you're still going XP, then 1GB should be fine. I wouldn't go out of my way to get Vista, but if I went Vista I would make sure I had at Least a Gig, with available slot(s) for more.

If you 19" or less LCD, 7600gt should be plenty. I've got a 22" 1680x1050 with a x850xt (roughly ~= 7600gt). With that higher resolution combined with high levels of AA & AF, LFS runs fine, but everything else is hurting.

Without overclocking from 2,0 GHz to 2,45 GHz my GFX would sleep the whole day.



Bought my system 1 year ago and now I could cry seeing a core duo 6300 system for less the money I paid.

Well i got a question, im looking at amd 64 x2 4400+ or a pentium D at 3.2ghz, wich are around the same price range here on brazil, but wich one is better? or should i save a little more and buy something that will increase my performance in a noticible way? and wich MB sould i buy for those Processors?

Buying a Pentium D at this point is completely and utterly stupid.

If you want to compare the Athlon 64 X2 with the Core 2 Duo, I think the Athlon currently has better performance for the price at the moment thanks to recent price cuts. Plus Athlon motherboards tend to be cheaper.

Probably not too far off that, depending on the game. Don't make the mistake that the numbers should match up most of the time, but looking through some reviews (here's one), it seems that the two do match up (or would, since the E4300 beats the 4200+ but falls short of the 4600+, so the 4400+ should match up fairly evenly).

Looking at Newegg, it appears that the 4400+'s are cheaper than the E6300's, but not by too much. If you're not interested in overclocking, the 4400+ may actually be better. If you are interested in OC'ing, the E4300 will reach further (most likely, your mileage may vary), even up into the Athlon64 FX series performance.

The Intel Pentium D is too slow. It might be good at video conversions but for everything else it's just too slow. The Core 2 Duo starts at $300 AUD (E6300) and the E6600 can make beat the AMD Althlon 64 X2 5200+ in most games and the AMD's have much lower frame rates in lower resolutions.
