Do 7 years count as "oldskool"?

Probably not, but anyways: I started out on Patch 0.5Q and still lurk here occasionally. I remember fondly the excitement and riddles leading up to patch R, and I remember sitting in the right Teamspeak channel at the right time when someone found the patch on the lfs.net server a little early.

Fast forward three years, during which I participated in a few minor cups and a 24 hours race, and I remember seeing the screenshots of the Scirocco in LFS and being blown away by the level of detail of that model.

After that, I remember looking at a certain counter and checking out the forums in intervals that only ever seemed to grow longer and longer.

But yeah, I'm still around

Quote from Joe93 :Rain for next 30mins or so is expected.

That would mean 6:45PM local time for the rain to stop. And then it's about 10 minutes until the track is dry enough to race again - behind the Safety Car. They shouldn't restart it since they can't reach 75% anyway.

Quote from Lampost22 :+1! Remembering the times when the forum was full of people waiting for a new patch to come out. It felt like being part of something great. Now its kind of sad to see nothing big happening. :-( I miss the atmosphere of departure to...a golden future?! (remembering STCC, 24h Races etc. etc...S2 Final ?)

Oh yes. 24 hour races especially. I LONG for another one, just one more, but alas, since no one is able or willing to step up to organize another one of these great events... meh. I can understand it because of the manpower needed, but it's a shame nonetheless.

Well, I am sure that 8 months since the release of patch Z weren't all filled with moving houses and br0ken internet connections. What I am not so sure about is that whatever the devs have in store for us will bring back the old enthusiasm. I sincerely hope it will.

Quote from th84 :These are pretty funny, Im pretty sure that they have been posted before.

My favorite...

Some of the (de)motivationals are funny as hell, but others really are downright offensive. 7/10 to you.

On the other hand, 10/10 to this thread. It's funny on one hand, but on the other, it kinda makes me sad.

I remember racing on patch Q for a year and a half, also on a PC incapable of running it (1.4GHz P4 / Radeon VE / 256 MB RAM, anyone?) .

And after that, I remember the excitement when some of us Germans found the S patch (yes, the one that first included the BF1) like three hours early because the dudes at 4players had uploaded it to their FTP server and only changed the file name to end in .zi instead of .zip (I still find myself regularly checking the FTP for this practice prior to releases of LFS patches )

Am I qualified to call myself a long time player nao?

Quote from Mattesa :That was great! With the announcer's focus on Hamilton I'm guessing that the announcing wasn't done in 1996.

Had you watched the videos to the end you'd know it was. Hamilton was already champion of the series by then, so obviously the focus was on him.

But I agree, great videos

Hey Scawen,

good to hear from you again, good that you haven't vanished from earth's surface yet (one really can't get rid of you, eh? ).

As you are doing your business from home, have you considered getting one of BT's or Virgin's business plans? Normally, those tend to be a bit pricey, but you have the advantage of a "100% availability" contract, and also the people that work on business support lines are a) a lot more motivated and friendly and b) actually having a clue about what they are talking about.

Quote from tristancliffe :Interesting...

I'm not sure what Griesson Soft Cakes are, nor how big/hard they are, but I'd love to see your challenge. If needs be then perhaps I'll attempt to beat you, but having comparible cakes might be difficult! Anyone know if Griesson Soft Cakes are sold in Britain?

Dunno. They basically are jaffa cakes, from all I know, just marketed under a different name. And they are explicitly permitted by the rules. Pic.

EDIT: have to postpone my challenge 'till monday, shop was already closed when i got there.

Sorry for bumping it yet again, but I gotta say this: After more than 2 years, this competition needs a take two. To get it going, I will stack up on "Griesson Soft Cakes" today and will show you my attempt at 10 cakes this evening. Just to challenge teh champion.

Quote from thatguy :This is a problem that i saw in patch Z7 i don't know if it would be any different in Z8 and I have no idea how to recreate this.

Happened to be watching someone elses tire temps when i saw this. The tire temps were flickering from orange back to the actual temps back and forth. If this is a known issue sorry.

errr... aren't the orange tyres displayed when the ABS kicks in? I can't see a bug here.

Oh, cool. Someone's driving a Red Bull F1 car on some closed roads in a big city. Yes, closed. There were police cars / bikes on every junction.

The car is 2009-spec, if I'm not completely mistaken (there's a KERS cooler on the right side). And IMHO, the dude was incapable of driving an F1 car, as the wheels slipped every time he pushed the throttle a bit (I don't want to say that I'd be better at it!). I personally think this is a PR stunt for Red Bull or some other company, nothing else.

Quote from Becky Rose :You're still coming round to see us all with mistletoe right? You're not going to renee on that aswell are you Scawen?

On the discussion about the cost of LFS and the wealth, I do have some educated insight into the machinery running, I wont go into details but I can say you've woefully under-estimated the hardware cost alone, let alone the rack rental etc. None-the-less LFS is 'healthy' financially.

What's more the business model is still based on Scawen "I'm not really a communist" Robert's ideal of how he wants to live his life, so you're not being screwed for additional money left right and centre like you would be if this game was being made by Sony or EA.

LFS is and remains an excellent product and superb value for money. As for the incomes of the devs, frankly, given their industry, skills, expertise, and risk associated with game development if they earn any less than quarter million a year then they are mugs.

I can confirm they are mugs.

Not to mention that

a) If this game was made by EA, this game in its current State (Z) would be called Live for Speed 4. Of course, we'd have paid about 200 quid for LFS (1, 2, 3 and 4) by now.

b) If this game was made by EA, we WOULD get the Scirocco by Friday (EA never miss a once-set release date), but it would be utter crap. EA would sell the fix for the scirocco along with a few more just-as-crappy-implemented cars (Maybe a Porsche and 1 or 2 Ferraris without any damage model) as LFS 5.

...

Thanks, but no thanks. I'm glad that the devs DID have the guts to postpone the release.

Quote from buedi :Just read that starting post from Scawen about that delay... and I can say it´s good news for me.
Why? 1st you need balls to say that something where hundreds of people are waiting is delayed. I am sure there will be many complains (no, I did not read the whole thread now).

But it´s great to hear that the release is delayed until the Bugs are fixed and more important, that the new features we get (including the car) will be released only when they reach the high standard we all expect.

2nd: I had not thought that we get the car this year, so I was really surprised that we should get it this week. Because of that I really have no problem waiting longer for something I did not expect to get before Q1 / Q1 2009.

So, thanks for delaying the Update and the Scirocco until it´s perfect. You do it better than most of the big companies where we all are playing REAL Beta testers (sadly you never find that on the Box!). Here, we play a Alpha which has a higher standard of quality than most released, boxed Products which claim they are finished

Looking forward to 2009 wishing all a very nice Christmas and a happy new year

+ a million. well said.

Quote from G. Dierckx :Well parallels desktop 4 now also is DirectX 9 capable... And I also triend vmware fusion but I had problems with my windows activation (switching from fusion to bootcamp and visa versa)...

Tho it might just be a windows problem.

You have to re-activate your copy of Windows once after you first open your BootCamp partition in VMWare Fusion. After you have reactivated, you MUST install the VMWare tools in your virtual machine. This will prevent you from having to re-activate every time you switch from BootCamp to VMWare and vice versa.

May I recommend using VMWare Fusion instead of Parallels? If I recall correctly, VMWare Fusion has far better 3D hardware emulation (DirectX 9 capable) - you might even squeeze a few more frames out of LFS like this.

Reissdorf Kölsch!

(legal age for drinking was 16 in Germany a while ago, I had a year to drink this before I was forbidden to drink it again . I still have to wait a month!)

In my opinion, a great beer, and definitely the best Kölsch to drink out of a bottle. Should be cold as ice for best taste.

TV tool? we used LFS TV Director (Server + GUI on two different PCs). Thanks to Soeren for that tool btw, worked great!
