Ok, a bit random, but definitely a racing reference here... After seeing this...

http://www.stirlingmoss.com/sh ... ia-722-replica-roller-map

I was drawn to try and find a copy (or more likely seeing as it would be several rolls, snippets) of the Moss/Jenks pace notes taken before the 1955 MM, or even a list of the roads used.

Has anyone come across any of the above, ever?

Quote from Ales_M :My point was if you wanna simulate something you should do it proper. And I cant see any sense in simulating car driving with keyborad.
Thats just my opinion, if ppl like to drive with kb and mouse, go ahead.

So we should all be playing LFS on full-blown Hydraulic simuators?

That aside, some people lack the space to set up a steering wheel? All we have in the flat atm is the one Laptop, and that spends most of it's time on the coffee table playing films/boxsets of BBC comedies. I have no room to setup a table with a wheel, and then if you're thinking FFB you have to include more spending for a decent table... (the only one we have can barely hold the laptop). I now play with a Gamepad, despite having (and prefering to drive with) my wheel.

Also, I can afford to run an internet connection, a laptop and nothing more because the laptop, the version of LFS and the gamepad were bought before we moved into the flat. Having an internet connection is cheaper than a TV, and we have no spare cash each month, so price is an issue, and we're not freeloaders.

Can also be (partially) explained away with power steering...

Quote from pandera :well, not a lifestyle, just a racing game that I find to be the best choice for myself to have some challenging fun
I am also interested in software and web developement and I am online a lot for professional reasons,
and regarding the racing itself I simply want to get as much as possible from my very limited time I have
I can only regret I am not a teenager any more... why, oh why didn't I have LFS then

It's not so much that the game becomes a lifestyle, however a lot of people take Racing seriously, and this is a way of racing, on the cheap, in a serious manner.

It's more that the game was born of the lifestyle, not the other way around, even if you put a lot of money into buying gaming steering wheels and simulation hardware, LFS still stops miles short of actually buying a car, burning a few gallons of petrol and buying replacement parts. You can also hit the track a bit more frequently.

I know several of the games "players" are regulars at their local kart track/racing track. This game/sim (however you describe it) offers more realism per pound than anything I've certainly tried in the past.

Quote from Becky Rose :

It is impossible to generate good sentiment amongst users as an admin. You are there to handle complaints. Therefor, whenever someone speaks to you they are already complaining - CTRA dismissed over 30% of all submitted reports, and that doesnt include the reports where the reportee was at fault but filed a complaint anyway. Yet all of those reports had a real person behind it - capable of word of mouth advertising - who expected the admin to action and penalise somebody.

Sounds like Customer Service to me... and unless you implented a team of non-playing MMORPG GM style admins to watch over it, and official servers that required a charge to be used it's quite simply not going to work.

Quote from Becky Rose :

I know there's a lot out there, over the last 30 years i've written over 100 of them. You wont demotivate me that easily ! And yes, the current project is quite special, it has a unique art style from a well established game asset artist, the music will kick ass too. But as i'm writing it, the gameplay will be simple and there'll be lots of bugs !

Good luck, Becky, I hope you find the time to finish it and polish it off etc... Myself I've been working on a few little projects this year, no-where near finished but am determined to finish them this time and perhaps throw them in the bin or maybe even try to use to get a job.

Quote from the_angry_angel :Precisely why I rarely visit or post, why I gave up trying to help with lots of things around here.

There's a phrase that says you can't polish a turd[1]. The visible LFS community has become a big steaming turd and no amount of elbow grease or bees wax is going to fix that now. Bad behaviour has become ingrained and accepted - and I'll admit that I'm just as guilty as anyone else about that. Whilst some of my old posts were very funny, and well directed (in my opinion), they were ****ing rude and realistically they should never have been allowed.

I also have to admit that it now takes effort to actually visit the forums these days. I've never been one for posting much, but I have enjoyed reading the forums, especially any that include technical insight, but I do find these days with update threads still being alive months after they are posted, but filled with insults, being a war between the "fanbois" and the "whiners" I cba;tbh.

I actually welcome people on the forum asking for help, it kinda distracts from the trolling and flaming going on.

Good luck

Exactly what I was going to post, Cheers Troy, have a beer.

@peejayh -
Be sure to check with BT that they don't block ports... BT do weird things to non-HTTP(S) ports during peak hours, like limiting speeds to 512kb/s, so check that port blocking isn't also part of their policy.

Quote from peejayh :I browsed through the piece on "port forwarding" in an attempt to solve the difficulty in getting two drivers on LFS to have access to a track limited only by knowing the right password. The website on port forwarding led me to a group who advertise a program called "pfconfig" and this, they claim, takes away all the responsibilities so that a "join-up" will be happily provided.
Has anyone any knowledge or experience of this program?
It sounds ideal if it does what it claims.

Port forwarding needs to be done from the gateway (router or PC depending on the network setup) itself, programs you run on your PC will do little to nopthing unless it's your gateway.

I would avoid installing any third party programs, you never know what they contain.

What Router have you got? Manufacturer and model number? Also, have you ever changed anything on the router (passwords, wireless networking, etc...)?

I thought, as I'm rather bored (and insomniac) at the moment, I'd brush off POV-ray and start fiddling about... here's just what I've acheived in the last couple of hours.

This will get much more complex as I fiddle more with each part, but it's a bit of a rough guide, and hopefully gives you an idea of how in depth I'm going to be taking this image...

After seeing one of these reach the end of the runway and climb almost vertically....

And of course I have to say this, when we saw it flying on TV it was damn impressive, unfortunately no pictures, I cba to spend more than 10minutes looking for it.

The Scrapheap Challenge Special aircraft, built by the British team to honour 100 years of flight, or something.

I also have a bit of a spot for the old Hercules

Actually I would love to see a 6R4/Audi S1 Rally supercar series, but these would be wasted without the full dirt/snow tracks.

Failing that, though, I would love to see a rival car for the UF1 (fiat styles have been mentioned) and a rival for the Scirocco maybe, but maybe not on this.

Purely because I'm me, I'd love to see a small lightweight roadster (rwd) with all the weight at the front... thinking Triumph Spitfire or MG B Roadster maybe even a Stag.

I would also like another 4WD, possibly something slower, put it in the range of the STD class...

Quote from KiRmelius :...Turbo lag is much bigger IRL. ... Even though it was a diesel, ...

This also depends on the car you were driving, not just the fuel... When I drove the Honda FR-V Diesel I hardly noticed the turbo lag, however, in the Focus it was horrendous, and I always found the car red-lined before you could sensibly use the power then you had to build up again after the change.

Although I suspect that the much higher red-line probably helped the Honda a lot (and knowing that Honda did a pretty good job building their new diesels almost from scratch, whereas I don't think the engine in the Focus hadn't been changed in years) and enabled the turbo to be much lighter.

All in all seeing how there's no sudden surge (as some turbos give) the low lag I feel isn't out of place.

I don't know if I will until you drop that daft blasphemy law or I'm going to rot in an Irish jail

Actually, I just remembered, in Dublin you get some of the funniest Graffiti... Outside the "to-be-in-laws" place there is, carved into the pavement, "Long Live John Paul II"....

It was certainly a first for me... But then I come from a place where they try to beat the Englishness out of you... so Ireland isn't much of a change... hehe

Meh, as long as nobody important hears you, you're fine, I get away with it enough... (Being Neo-Pagan in a Catholic country... lol)

I'll definitely have a poke around, I'm sure there's some sort of track near as I flew over it when coming in over the bay...

BTW, regarding cheap flights, if it's less than 10kgs (or looks it) and fits in the overhead lockers, you don't pay extra for hand-baggage (although it's normally hard to hit both of those) on most eco-flights... I got away with a £15 flight via Aer Lingus and that included Heathrow charges/taxes.

Quote from Becky Rose :I can on the track, which is what this thread is meant to be about.

I'm up for a uk meet, and possibly holland later in the year, I don't fancy Norway because being a Brit I like to bring cheap booze into the country not out of it - i'd use all my allowance just bringing enough for Tor!

I can have a poke around Ireland if you fancied? No promises just yet though, and again, it's not particularly cheap here, and there's barely room in the flat for me and the missus, let alone the possibility of 30 other people

As long as I've got the cash a UK meet would rock, and the missus has always wanted to see Scotland...

Quote from JeffR :I think my offsetting weight method would produce similar results, the tire would tend to lock up at a previous flat spot. I don't know if or how the current segmented model deals with flat spots that are longer than one tire segment, so it's hard to say just how realistic it is.

A dynamic (variable size) segmented model would be more accurate, to prevent it from getting overly complex, there would need to be some arbritrary limit on the number of dynamic segements on a tire.

I think you're going to have to try and explain what by Dynamic (variable size) you mean?

I can see several possible options, although none seem to add significantly more benefits. Also, I think the weight offsetting is missing the fact a flat spot is not only goin to cause vibrations at the wheel, but it will miss out the wear of the tyre... at the moment the LFS Tyre model allows you to flat spot the tyre, as a result making you more likely to catch this flat spot again and the segments of the tyre that are overheating/flat are also thinner now and getting thinner with every lock up...

Ok, I'm gonna be honest here, I actually gave this a VERY wide berth until a few hours ago (the thread I mean). I am sick of the post, counter-post, insult, counter-insult circle that normally happens.

My views are made clear by the quote on my sig...

However, I'm gonna break my silence just quickly, but I'm not going to babble on about anything dev-related.

This was quite a good OP, possibly broken by the fact that it was public... I do get a feeling that people feel they need to post in the first option as their names are on show.

I have a Driving Force Pro, (well, it's about 500 miles away currently, but I can more or less remember my button map)

I have the D-Pad set to look around the car (left, right and down) and fire the ignition (up), Start and Select are horn and lights R1 and L1 are the driving aids (TC, Speed limiter), Shifter is the shifter, paddle shifter is the clutch and handbrake, Circle Square Triangle and X are mapped to chat functions.

These are the ones I can remember right off... Other people might prefer having other things mapped, and remember if you use a stick shifter put the button clutch on the opposite side to the stick...!!

Quote from AcesHigh :It was back in 2005-2006 when used to play demo.

I have to say it was a really bad move from the devs to remove the s1/s2/demo filter... it completely killed off the demo combo´s for me and alot of my friends.

BL GP and BL rallycross and GTi class was really good and fun racing untill they merged it together... now its just a real crashfest and there is no way to ban players since they are on demo, and can create a new account if they want to since its free...

BL2R with GTi cars and the BF1? That would get rid of the demo-ers... hehe, and surely nobody with an S2 license would nuts enough to race the BF1 on Rallycross... mind you, I've been wrong in the past.

EDIT: this is better then now right

LOLZ Poser!!

I am looking forward to car roll... it's really quite weird to see a car "dive" under braking and stay flat through the corners... hehe.

Regarding the OP... I once had to endure someone (with one of the later NFS titles) lecture me on how he could drive "Real cars" and because it had "Real cars" it must be realistic, I mean, manufacturers wouldn't allow their cars to be represented in a false fashion, would they?

I cba to argue with him, so I just nodded and moved away...
