Nice interresting info Scawen, this is what I ment with an 'update report'

After some time, I thought, let's see if anything changed at LFS. What a surprise: nothing.......

Ok, on topic:

Try GTR Evolution, it 'feels' the same as LFS, but has a lot more to offer. And there is scheduled a next generation for 2011, look at their website for a some info.

Quote from HorsePower :Have you any idea how much effort it would be to get new people to a point where they are able to understand all the LFS coding implemented so far good enough to be helpful at all?

I'm a professional software developer in a big company and I know what I'm talking about. LFS surely is such a big project that educating new people in order to be helpful to the project would cost Scawen more time altogether than just doing it by himself. Also the code quality would clearly suffer from that.

I don't like the speed of progress of LFS either, but complaining won't help. So I play nothing or something else until the next update comes. And maybe I don't even have any interest anymore in LFS when the next update comes, but that's fine for me and fine for Scawen I think. No one really cares. Life is more than just LFS.

Depents on what point the development is (the sad thing is, we don't know). If what you say would be thru, there wouldn't be any 'multi people' projects on the world.
But there are, and to make that possible, you have to devide the project in parts, and everyone does his/her part. But for that to work out well, the project has to be wel documented. And LFS probably isn't.... I think the problem is that the source of LFS is a very very long spaghetti sourcecode with no comment lines at all, which only Scawen can understand and probably sometimes he can't either (that's why it takes so long)

  • People forgot this have been the devs' full time jobs for the years (is it 7+ now?). If they don't work on LFS then they don't attract customers and then they don't make money. They have families to support and in order to do that, they need to put together a quality piece of work that can stay competitive with the uber-realistic market.

Well, if that is important to them. I suggest the first thing they should do is keeping the existing community with LFS, by keeping us updated on the progress (even if there's very little progress). That simple action would reduce the irritation quite a bit I think.

Quote from troy :No they don't, you paid once and got LFS in it's current state, everything else is just a bonus, you should read the license agreement.

Yes they do, the license agreement is about getting updates, not about keeping us posted on progress. The plan with LFS has always been, S1, S2, S3. I don't care if S3 is ever going to be released or not, but leaving us in the dark, that attitude I will not accept. I won't buy S3 because of that, even if it's going to be released at all (don't worry, it won't)

Yes they do, I'm one of their paying customers and like to be treated like one.

I don't find it frustrating that the new update takes longer as expected, complex things take time (to the devs: maybe you should accept the help some of us (tallented programmers) offered and get things in higher gear....).
But I DO find it frustrating the devs treath us like we are some low life idiots by not giving some kind of progress report, leaving us in the dark. Sure the devs don't HAVE to do anything, but I'll think they owe that to the community. Because without the community there won't be LFS.

All the moaning is caused by the devs themselves. Because with their, in my opinion, arrogant attitude of telling us nothing!
A simple 'we are still working on it' from them, would be enough.
Offcourse the devs don't have to do anything if they don't want to, but that tells me a lot about how they think about us.

Anyone who still thinks that LFS's new tire physics will be released at all is an idiot!
It's obvious that the devs dropped LFS developing. It has been 1,5 years after they were planning the release (dec 18th 2008), so dream on.
I'm already trying other race simulation games, 'racer' looks nice...

I would think that each setting has an optimal setting at which it gives most grip. The further away you get from this setting, the less grip it gives (so a boat-like behaving suspension setup would never be faster that the realistic setting) . And that total grip is the sum of all these grip value's. Or is that a too simple approach..
Strange settings for fastlaps

I have been watching a couple of hotlaps and the thing I noticed, the strange setups these hotlapcars have. Most of the time the setup is very weak, the car behaves like an american cadillac, how is it possible that such a setup can be faster than a realistic setup?
I've never seen a F1 car driving like it's on flat tyres..

I think there is something really wrong with the LFS physics.

Is there some way to handover your car to another driver while racing? So you can do teamracing, like Lemans etc., where serveral drivers race for a period of the race?

Because it isn't finished. The test team presumably found more faults/bugs/problems than could be resolved in those 4 months, or it could be a myriad of other reasons. Chill.

Ok, but why isn't it finished?
I don't think (as a programmer myself) when you spent several months on a tyre model algorithm, you bump into such major bugs that it takes months after releasing the alpha version, to correct them.
And again, letting the community know would not harm anyone.

Quote from Matrixi :I think most of us were quite aware that Scirocco wouldn't make it out in 2009 after reading about the new tire physics in august, but people were also expecting some other significant patches this year while waiting for it.

I had hoped the new tyre physics were going to be released this Xmas. Especially because in the august briefing we were told that the patch was currenlty being tested by the testteam... I concluded that was as good as ready for a release, only a few bugs to fix. But now, after another 4 months, nothing happend. I'm not a kid and don't like to be threated like one. At least tell us why it hasn't been released yet.

The problem is, the devs refuse to have a timeline. So they don't feel pressure to continue, and the result is, nothing happening or at least at a very slow rate. I experience the same for myself, if I don't HAVE to, it results in not doing it at all.
In my opinion, if Scawen can work on tire physics full time, it should have been possible to finish it in 2 or 3 months. I think he's only working on it when he wants to and that is perhaps only a few hours a week. I'm afraid he lost his drive to develop LFS, and LFS will silently die....

Normally shift at the redline, because a car pulls harder in a lower gear than it would in the next, even when the torque curve is going downwards.

Closed diff

As far as I know, race cars never use a closed diff (only a gocart does). How come that many fast setups do use a closed diff in LFS?

The reason why I'm interested in those WR setup's is, because I do spent many hours creating setups. But at some point I don't know what to change anymore to get it better. And a testlap in the WR car shows that it can be better, I just can't figure out why.

And I agree fully with the devs, if you don't want others to learn from your hotlap, then don't upload it.

I don't see extracting setup info from a .spr file as stealing. As the information in de .spr file is given to you. What you read out of it, is up to you.
I don't understand the discussion about WR setup info in the first place, if you don't want to show it to others, than don't upload the .spr
Racing is about driving skills, not about knowledge of the setup

I've bin to a F1 race 3 times now and 1 time in Maranello where Ferrari was testing a F1 at that time. You can feel the gearshifts hitting your chest, let alone the exhaust noise. You could hear the F1 screaming everywhere in Maranello (nobody complaining about noise there ) If that doesn't hurt your ears, then there's something wrong with yours.

The problem I ment, is a dynamic problem. To solve that you should include the angle of the passing car in your engine volume algorithm.
Sound of a car as a spectator

Yesterday I was viewing my own hotlap and I noticed that the volume of a car driving by is not very realistic in my opinion. In real life on a trackday, you hear the car coming to you quite like it is in LFS, but when it passes you and is driving away with the exhaust pointed toward you, hell, it hurts your ears... even when it's 100 meters away.
So I think the sound a car that drives away from the spectator is muted to much to soon...

I've tried it, that's not really what I ment. It's some sort of helicopter view, but not enough detail.
I was thinking more like the helicopter view in LFS. High detail, so you can see where exactly the other car is, who is chasing you..
