South City's secret area - And what could have been

This is a part of LFS that always intrigued me. This piece of unused content right here:

This is an out-of-bounds area in South City, blocked off by a tyre barrier under the highway bridge. At first glance, it appears to just be part of the background, pure decoration that was never meant to be seen from this angle.

That is, until you place a ramp nearby and get a car over the tyre barrier. In earlier versions of LFS, you would be reset after going too far into it, but in an era where open configurations are a thing, this doesn't happen, and we find out...

...that most of the roads in this area are actually solid and fully drivable! Despite this area being blocked off and made part of the background, most of this area can be driven on, although the minimap doesn't actually display all of the drivable area, only some of it.

The map, as seen below, does display properly in the track selection screen, so this appears to be a bug with the in-game HUD not being able to display the full map, probably because it's too big. This might be part of the reason why this area was scrapped.

Perhaps the biggest thing about this area is that the cinematic camera actually works here, unlike most other out of bounds areas that aren't meant to be driven on.

Compared to another (less interesting) secret area, the kart track to the east of the Autocross area, which has no road leading to it, blocked off or not, and can only be accessed by placing a start position in that area, the cinematic camera doesn't work at all there.

And below are the rest of the cinematic cameras in this area:

These camera angles seem almost placeholder-like, adding to the unfinished air of this area. They aren't new, either, these have existed for a long time, since before open configs were even a thing. However, back then the only way to drive here was by placing starting position beyond the tyre barrier, and because LFS loses track of your car if you do that, you couldn't even see where you were going, so it would have been much harder to showcase this area in the earlier patches.

No official name was ever given to this section, but I just call it the industrial section since the only buildings here are four warehouses. It seems that, at some point, this section was supposed to be a part of the South City track, probably with its own configurations, but development on it stopped and with how slow LFS development goes, the devs might have forgotten it even existed. Perhaps now, with South City receiving a major revamp, this area could see the light of day in a different way, much like the Westhill National layout (which was also planned from the beginning if you take a closer look at the old Westhill).

If the devs ever read this thread, I'd like to know what were the circumstances that led this area to being cut from the game. Was it the HUD not being able to show the full map? Did the devs just forget it existed? Or was it something else?

You seem to not mind if we post our own skins in the other threads you made, so here's one of mine. Honestly, it's about time some of these mods get official threads for skins.

This is the Lamborghini 291, from 1991, ran by Scuderia Modena. Car reproduced is the #34 driven by Nicola Larini.

Already uploaded.

No way. Are you actually serious?

DLC saving LFS? Don't make me laugh.

If the devs do that, which I highly doubt they ever will, then LFS is dead to me. And to a lot of other players.

Yes, if you play rFactor 2, you are racing in a video game. Play LFS? Same thing. No matter how realistic it may be, it's still a video game. And if you go overboard with monetization, people stop playing, and your game dies.

The way LFS does things right now is perfect. The mods system is the best thing to ever happen to this game. And if you don't like it, go play another game. It's what people do when they don't like a game: They go play something else.

I saw the name and started laughing uncontrollably.

DO NOT USE THIS MOD ONLINE, YOU WILL GET OOS!

Otherwise, very fun to smash up AI offline with this behemoth. LFS doesn't have to be serious all the time.

I believe the tank's massive curb weight is what causes the OOS errors, but I might be wrong.

Quote from Scawen :We thought of a reason for this - it may be the list of allowed mods was sent to the host before the host was fully set up. So it could be a different result depending on timing. Now there is a check to make sure the host is fully online before sending the list. Hopefully that fixes the issue, but it's hard to say for sure as we didn't see the issue in testing.

I saw a bug that may have caused this. If on a host with a limited list of mods, so you see that list, then return to single player or join a host without a limited list, the previous list could still be in memory until the list is refreshed. Fixing now so the fix will be in W46.

I honestly wouldn't mind if you just left this as-is. You see, there isn't really a way right now for users to see the list of allowed mods on a server, unless the server itself tells us outright (usually a cruise server through its InSim, you can simply look at the car list). So we basically have to try our installed mods one by one to figure out what's actually usable or not.

It would honestly be better if we just had a way of seeing that list ourselves - And if so, we can turn this "bug" into a useful feature. If you're on a host with a limited list of allowed mods, the in-game list will only show the mods usable on that host. Makes for a nice QoL improvement.

Modding support is fantastic news, especially being with official tools. One of the main reasons why VOB mods were so bad was because they were very difficult to make without official support. Official tools should make the whole process much easier.

And having car mods with their own specs and physics and everything? And potentially being able to "copy" an existing LFS model? Wow. While they might still be useful for S2 and lower players who won't have access to the mod tools, for S3 users the tweaker applications will become pretty much obsolete. I can have my V10 formula 1 car without them!

The hosting situation is a problem, though. If quite a few servers on S2 might die because of this, I can't even imagine how the demo community will handle this - There might not even be a demo community anymore. Hosting will be far too expensive for them. You might as well not even have a demo if it reaches that point - Make it so nobody can download LFS unless they have paid for a license, and the game will require a log in to run.

My first time skinning the FO8, so it's probably not that great, but here it is anyway: The Minardi M197, from the 1997 F1 season.

It's been a while since I last made a skin so I'm probably a bit rusty, and considering I was never that good with them to begin with this one probably kinda sucks. But it's okay. In the end, it's the effort that counts.

If anyone wants to use it, it's already uploaded.

I'd like to have this one made for the FXR: My personal favorite GT500 livery, the ARTA Zexel Skyline GT-R as driven by Aguri Suzuki and Michael Krumm in 1999.

Screenshots are from a TrackMania mod because they are the only okay-ish pictures of the car I could find. I don't like using something like this, but it will have to do.

I think I understand. What he wants is a 'ghost car' function like some other games have, probably for hotlap mode (and perhaps allowing you to load a hotlap replay as a ghost car). I think this was never implemented because it's either seen as too unrealistic or simply isn't possible on the LFS game engine.

I would love for the trams to be movable via InSim, but that's probably not gonna happen.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing Fern Bay. It was left for last, so it better be the best one, because that track really needs a massive overhaul.

Hmmm, let's see here...
It's his first post and the account was created two weeks ago. So no, he probably hasn't been following the monthly updates.
Trolling him into buying the game to 'unlock better graphics'. Really?
And seriously, accusing him of being a cracker without any sort of proof? I've seen enough.

This community is unsalvageable. This is why LFS is dying: You're all a bunch of ****s. Let the new guy be a new guy and stop bullying him like that!

I'm not into drifting, but to be honest, I'm surprised LFS never got a dedicated drift car considering the drifting community is, and has always been, a big part of this game.

Even as someone who has no interest in drifting, I know this is something that needs to happen.

I always personally thought that rule was kinda stupid since both the CMX Viewer and skin templates are accessible to anyone, licensed or not, but I guess if it falls under the "demo users can only post demo content" part, then okay.

Not gonna lie, I kinda feel bad for demo users on this forum. Wouldn't be surprised if, soon enough, they can't even access the forum anymore, and I've read enough posts to know a lot of people here would actually celebrate if that happened.

Quote from cargame.nl :the online racing simulator, it says on top of every page.

It's not about unique, it's about racing. This electrical nonsense is not meant for racing. Can't race with massive accupacks on wheels. Formule E and thats about it. Says enough.

LFS hasn't been a racing game for a long time now. If anything, it's more of a drifting/cruising game now, so I'd say throw that away and call it a driving simulator.

Quote from Yisc[NL] :Small correction, LFS isn't developed in their free time.
For Scawen and Eric this game is a fulltime job.

Fair enough, but due to the sheer size difference between the teams behind these sims, I still think comparisons are unfair.

Sometimes I wonder if this community actually realizes that LFS is developed by three people, and not a whole studio. The comparisons to the likes of rF2 and Assetto are so unfair it makes me genuinely feel bad for the LFS devs. Those games have entire studios behind them that are pretty much working on those games 24/7. LFS is an indie game developed by three people on their free time, and I think a lot of people fail to grasp that.

LFS isn't updated any quicker because it is humanly impossible for a three-person team to work on a game as extensively as an entire studio of 50+ people. It just doesn't work like that.
