Quote from ATC Quicksilver :Interstate 76 was a great game, if someone can make anything remotely close to that then I am interested.

I don't know about help, but I take the real Interstate 76 every couple weeks or so...

Another common problem that will cause excessive rear camber is worn out springs. When springs wear out, they sag, and will cause the rear of the car to sit lower. That seems likely to me seeing that you have very similar wear on both tires.

Blue line, duuhhhh.

It's the same reason why the equater goes around the earth, and not tangentially off into space.

but. yeah.... This is a simply one. Suppose two people hold a rope and stretch it until it has zero sag. The rope seeks to find the shortest distance between the peeps. That distance is a straight line. Now, the fellas start to back away from each other until until they pass beneath the horizon. At that point, the rope is touching the earth at a spot equidistant from our two friends. As these guys continue to back away from eachother, the rope continues to touch the earth at more and more points.

Then again... Once they disappear over the horizon, won't the rope begin to slip off to the side unless a third friend is holding it at the midpoint? Remember, the tension in the rope is attempting to relieve itself by finding the shortest distance between the two rope jockeys?

And a final question... Once the rope circles the earth, can you jump the rope? Or is the rope jumping you? This part has me LOLing at myself. Once you get the rope turning, would it remain in motion forever in orbit?

Wait... People actually took this seriously?

All the signs pointed towards tomfoolery. The only good thing that will come of this is that the family will be billed for the search and rescue efforts.

Quote from anttt69 :Does anyone else think Jefferson is a bit mickey mouse? Pile up central, they should at least run smaller grids there.

Did you know...

that Summit Point Jefferson was designed to be run in both directions?

Yes, it is a really tight and short course. And yes, it is almost exclusively a driving school track. Although, there is a hill climb club that uses it for a TT course.

The really fun thing about the track is that during a half hour run session, you can easily do 30 or so laps. hehehe. I remember lapping a Ferrari 348 with my Taurus.

Hmmm. JPM may just 'top five' himself into a championship. That would be pretty cool.

Lol. I just thought of something. Why don't we have a thread about broccolli? We could have a few people in favor, then a dozen or so folks rambling on and on about how much they hate the stuff. All of this banter about "NASCAR this, and Nascar that" really the same thing.

For what it's worth, F1 cars look pretty similar to me. Swoopy open wheel cars with wings tacked on. Same with bikes, dragsters, v8 supercars. They all pretty much look the same. Perhaps that's why they're in the same race.

What's the third car in line?

That picture is from the testing phase of the COT. They're prototypes.

Who cares if they're different or not? The manufacturers are essentially sponsors at this point. Perhaps more involved than Cheerios, Budweiser, and National Guard, but whatever. There isn't much 'Ford' about Matt Kenseth's car.

Every team (those that build their own cars) uses a different car. They're not Fords, Chevys, Dodges, and Toyotas. It's Hendrick, Roush, MWR, Petty. From Engines, to chassis's, to bodies. They're all different 'brands' unto themselves. Even the bodies. Nascar gives the teams a bit of room to engineer. In other words, the templates have a tolerance that allows the teams to do their own thing.

Quote from duke_toaster :I don't know about Beetles, but IIRC there was a race around that time where it was NASCAR regulars versus European motors on an oval and it was somewhat close (?), and with a bit of googling a Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag won a race in '54.

Entering a NASCAR Strictly Stock race used to be much easier.

Jag ought to make a return to NASCAR. They seem to have some pretty slick sedans these days. It might be a pretty useful marketing tool to get their name back into the minds of Americans as well.

Quote from bunder9999 :as for the "to get close to some[thing|one]", yeah, i dunno how they came up with that one... the only thing i can think of would be some sort of drift/gymkhana shit.

That would mean trying to clip road cones. Haven't we all tried it?

Quote from lizardfolk :I wonder if Reutimann has a chance of getting in

Yeah. But he's got to win, lead the most laps, grab the brass ring, and have every other contender finish at the back of the pack.

It would be nice though.

Quote from bunder9999 :i found myself watching nascar tonight, dunno why, i must be bored as hell...

how come the cars have insignas for cars like impala and camry, when the cars all look the same in shape?

The manufacturers are, to a large extent, sponsors. They pay the teams to put the decals on the car. I know it's more involved than that, but it's an easy way to look at it.

Quote from JeffR :The air underneath is a significant source of resistance, as it has to flow from cylinder to cylinder, which consumes power. This is why drag vehicles use a vacuum pump to reduced the amount of air in the crankcase.

No. The crankcase is very open in the vast majority of engines. Air can freely flow from one cylinder to another. In addition, the crankcase is vented to the intake downstream of the throttle butterfly.

noise during engine braking? Listen to the first bit here. I'm off and on the throttle while exiting the pits. lots of pops and crackle (microphone is inside the car, attached to the roll cage). That was one of the cool things about that car. It scared the piss out of people when I drove it around town. And yes, I did drive it every day like that.

That's exactly what it is. What an engine that thing had. I wish I still had it. 160,000 miles and still ripping around the road courses of the north east.

Quote from tristancliffe :Experience is best. They can't teach you, in a course, how to diagnose and cure every fault. They'll barely teach you the basics of what you need to know. If they do 'extras' like welding courses, they are worthwhile though.

Exactly what he said. A class is good and will help you find a job, but you will not be considered a mechanic until you have the years of experience. It's always good to learn from someone who has experience. You'll learn more from that than by reading a book.

The best way to learn how to be a mechanic is to buy a rare car. Something where the replacement parts are hard to find, expensive, and in some cases completely obsolete.

With experience and time, you will be able to logically diagnose issues. Just learn to read wiring and vacuum diagrams, understand how the components of a car work, and you will do fine.

BTW, what is your current level of expertise? Do you work on your own car? Are you like me and avoid letting other people touch your car at all costs? Would you be afraid to rebuild your transmission?

What is TV saying these days? I've never really bothered to watch a lot of drama/cop/reality type stuff. If it wasn't for racing and baseball, I'd completely do without television. Heck, I don't even have one at home.

For what it's worth, Philadelphia is earning a reputation as a dangerous place. Sure there's more crime there than in a typical small town or community, but I've never been uneasy about going there. I really don't have a reason to go to the more dangerous neighborhoods. The worst I've seen is a bum hastling a lady for spare change/food/etc.. That didn't last more than a few seconds before a cop took care of the situation. That was in broad daylight right near the Independence Hall/Liberty Bell area.

Yes, there are huge differences in social classes. It depends on how much money you make, how you make it, where you live, where you want to be in life, and who you want to be. I would imagine it's like that pretty much anywhere. Just by going about my business, I am kept away from people way outside my social class. Perhaps I just live in a down to earth area where people don't run around flaunting their status.

"i live in the suburbs near DC and its prettty safe here but in SE dc i wouldnt go there during the day and especially at night."
You are very right. I went down there to look at a car that I was thinking about buying. It was the neighborhood right near the Redskins stadium. The north side of DC is very nice.

Quote from DieKolkrabe :I hope NASCAR leaves the Glen as it is, both crashes were the driver's faults IMO, there is zero need to change the track, they are limited by the long course (Is that still used for anything?)

Yes, In fact most WGI events use the boot. I used it in July of 2007 and 2008.

I agree that they could use different barriers there. They could use those big foam blocks like they used to have down in T1. Although, my personal opinion is to leave the track unchanged.
