Quote from SamH :If you have an issue one week with a bunch of drivers acting in a way you know is against the rules, and you raise not one single report against them, you should not be surprised to see the same behaviour continuing into the 2nd week.

I guess you got a point here. It's just that some days the task looks so large that you start to think that report stuff is pointless.

Quote : The CTRA doesn't do very much live admining for a couple of reasons ...

Oh but that's not I was asking for

Quote :We've built the reporting system to be used.. use it. If you use it and it doesn't work, THEN come up with some alternative ideas. Try it first though, please.

I will and I made my first report today. Only one ... that was a very civilized day, for a change
And about alternative ideas, I think it's no harm to throw in some, as long as it's presented as a free suggestion and not a request. No need to be so defensive

I've often been playing on CTRA SS1 recently, and I have to agree with the fact that it's not as friendly as it deserves to be. It's not really about making it "noobs free", or excluding slow people I think this not the point. It's about finding a way to prevent people to drive absolutely recklessly. I've seen slow people that are not a threat or "moving chicanes", and do their best not to cause crashes. And I've seen fast people making very dangerous and illegal moves.

On peak hours, I'd say that about 40-50% of the people do at least one of the following illegal actions a few times in the race :
1 - Rejoining race after a crash without checking if the way is clear
2 - Not leaving a minimal safe distance with the car in front of you before hard brakings.
3 - Abusive tailgating to prevent a pass, with sometimes even voluntary contact (not the best way to protect your life in a single seater )
4 - And the most common of all : not leaving enough room for the car you are overtaking, or that you are trying to overtake. I've sometimes been hit so hard in that situation that I've come to the conclusion that it is either voluntary, or either that the guy was retarded enough to forget that three seconds ago I started to completely overlap him (which unfortunately seems to be true in more cases than anyone would think).

I don't know what you think about that, but even if everyone has probably done 1 & 2 sometimes, at least in his early LFS days, my opinion is that 3 & 4 are absolutely intolerable and can ruin the racing experience of everyone.

As a consequence, when I'm joining the server, I have a somewhat hard time surviving to the end of the first race, even being overly cautious (because I am prepared to everything I previously stated). Once I get a decent qualifying position, ok I can have fun and mostly clean races with the top third of the pack.

Now what to do ? fill reports ? Honestly, I'd be reporting people almost every race if I had to follow strictly the CTRA rules (which are very fair and accurate), and I'm not a fan of repression on such a scale. I'd rather like to see more educationnal measures, something that will make the reckless players realize that it is in everyone's interest, especially in theirs, to offer clean races.

My two cents on the topic : maybe a good idea would be that if you do not finish a race, you cannot enter the following one. With that rule :
- Reckless players would understand much better why one says "to win a race (and points) you first have to finish it", and therefore drive more cautiously.
- Victims of an illegal move would be more prompt to fill reports, as now that motherf^W^W disrespectful player ruined not only one of their races but two. That would help making the place more clean in the long run, though it can be a tough price to pay for the 'victims'.
- Beginners would drive more cautiously, focusing on handling the car safely rather than driving like in hotlap mode and crashing in every lap.

Thoughts anyone ?

PS: All that being said, it's still a pleasure to drive on CTRA and I appreciate all the work that has been done to give us a great racing experience
Yet the place deserves to be much more friendly and I'd like, if not asking too much, to see something to be done about it.

Hi,

Simply hold the 'Alt Gr' directly to the right of the spacebar (and NOT 'Alt', which is on the left) key while typing in your racername. There will appear a menu that give you access to various characters (from different charsets) and colors.

Edit: pwned but at least you have TWO solutions now

Quote from Capt Hobbes :Is there such a thing?

What I'm looking for are replays in standard RACE_S setups, XFG and XRG, ideally BL or maybe SO. Not WRs, just nice clean laps close to the setup limit. The reason is I don't want to bother tweaking the car before I tweak myself, so it would be great to have an example to follow. Thanks!

That's exactly what I was thinking when I started playing, but the problem is that any driver good enough to make such "educationnal replays" cannot imagine racing without tweaking the default setups of the cars, which can be pretty terrible sometimes. That means even an excellent driver couldn't get anywhere close to a WR.
This is particularly true for the FBM for example, which default setup is very easy to drive (high understeer), but absolutely crappy when it comes to getting even decent laptimes. And learning to handle the FBM well with that default setup won't teach you much about handling it with a high-performance setup, because it would then oversteer much more, and handle completely differently.

I don't know if I'm really clear, but from my little LFS experience, my point is that you should learn tweaking the car and driving well at the same time, because being able to make a good setup is part of the game. Or at least, download WR setups and start tweaking them/learning to drive from there. If you don't know already about it, here's a good place to find setups from the best drivers :

About tweaking the cars, here's an excellent guide to start with, it was very useful to me :
