(Running a 2900 with just the 4 pin with no problems o.o It boots)

I bet you haven't plugged something in!!

Read my last post - for overclocking (with ATi overdrive or whatever) you needed the full 8-pin connector.

Gotta admit i heard bad things about FSP being cheapy (mate had one go pop!) - best makes are OCZ, Seasonic, Corsair etc!

But anyway the thread isn't about this!

Tbh JakG easiest thing to do is Ebay your PSU and buy another.

Errrrr, OCZ use FSP to make at least one of their PSU's for them...

No, it's there 600w model - the only issue it has is slightly higher Ripple than other PSU's, and even then only when highly loaded.

Lemme guess - if I got a PCP&C PSU you'd still think think it was a dodgy brand?

Dodgy brands to me are the ones such as Q-Tec, Hiper etc.

The ones that are made of cheap nasty bits and will go pop.

My power supply is a cooler master. Only 550W, but it does the trick (I think/hope).

I don't really need any more than 580w (at least I was running with that on a rubbish PSU), but I would just rather something that didn't need continual cooling to work properly, that didn't get so hot and that wasn't likely to fail soon - And so I bought a good PSU when I saw it cheap...

I have an OCZ 600W PSU which powers my rig fine, was a bit more expensive at £40 or something but it works, I can say that

I'm sorry, FOUR 12 V rails? No wonder you got that cheap, that thing is rubbish... Does one rail even have enough amps to power your graphics card properly? If not, there likely is your problem...

Of course, I've just missed the simplest solution of them all :doh:

Replace the 4-pin connector on your current PSU with the 8-pin from the last one. Just cut the new one off and tape (or if you're really fancy, use one of those connector yokes with the screws. No idea of the name :shy the one from the old PSU on. Should do the trick

Are you sure that there aren't two 4-pins on the new one though? On my PSU it had an 8-pin, and you had to split it in half for the 4-pin on my mobo. Maybe it's the opposite case on yours?

or.....next time you see an item going cheap, you make sure it supports your shit.

jakg plug the 4 pin connector into the 8 pin connector. it will only go in one way. your computer will work fine with it like that. the extra 4 pins are a few grounds and i think one power witch is not needed. just plug it in and if that was your problem then it will boot right away and everything will be good to go.

I have a recollection of needing to buy the 8pin cable when I tried to power up my P5B. Unfortunately I can't remember if it was because it wouldn't boot, or just if the 4pin cable didn't reach in my P180.

I bought an OCZ 500watt that only had the 4 pin, but my motherboard has an 8 pin.

So it wont boot - you need the 8 pin otherwise there is not enough power!

I had two mainboards in recent years, both of which had the 8-pin CPU power sockets, and BOTH had half of them covered by a sticker... Now why would manufacturers do that if it wouldn't work without all 8 pins connected?

Don't fixate on the pins - the amps are what make or brake a system!

Whether you need an eight pin connector or can get away with a four pin connector, depends on the CPU your using.
Most motherboards cover a wide range of CPU's, with the lower end of the scale only needing the four pin connector, but the higher end requiring the 8 pin connector.

I have a Xeon X3210 (pretend it's a Q6600 for convieniance) so I propably need the connector...

For some odd reason this PSU has _NO_ 4-pin plugs. At all. And I can't find any adaptors. Will sort my room out and grab one from work on Saturday...

EDIT - My CPU is not a Q6600, but it's a quad core based off pretty much the same thing - it's simply the cancelled Q6420, with the Xeon name and altered prefetchers which still runs on Socket 775.

FWIW my Q6600 runs fine on 4-pin. My motherboard only has a 4-pin Are you sure you've put the 4-pin on the right half of the 8-pin? Like, you've tried both sides?
