I know this may be in the wrong section, but i was wondering because you guys have really high speed downloads, my average being 60 kbps, could you please help me to speed it up, or isnt it possible, sorry if this is in the wrong section

You are on 512 kbps internet connection, from the sound of things

Most ISPs seem to give you the best possible speed you can get from your line. It will all depend on how far away you are from the exchange, from what I can understand. I've got an up to 8mb service but only get 3mb downstream.

You're probably too far from the exchange to get good speeds. on ADSL the further away from the exchange you are, the slower your connection. Hence the upto 8mbit etc.

Download speed? Hmm, mine is around 4.5kps if I'm not loading a webpage at the same time. Multiple stuff going on and it usually hangs around 2-2.5k .

Everyone else knows, but OP author doesn't.... I'm the leading 56k dialup user here on LFS .

Nothing beats a STEADY connection. Fast BB connections are not always consistent. Especially in the UK, at the moment, with lots of traffic shaping being introduced and a whole ISP culture moving against any net traffic in the bittorrent port ranges.. unfortunately, LFS falls victim to this often, but the intended target for deliberately poor service is actually the P2P traffic.

I dont get the whole internet speed thing - according to blue yonder ive got a 4Mb connection but in networking its 100 Mbps

But to answer the first question - Usually around 300 kb/s but fastest ive seen is was 500 kb/s

Best place to download is my university lol, downloaded trial version of photoshop of adobes site (the PC i was on didnt have PS) and it downloaded at 8 Mb/s

Your ethernet card connects to your router/cable modem at 100Mbps, whereas your cable modem connects to the blueyonder network at 4Mbps.

Essentially yes, if you are using your internet connection at full load.

I however, now have 100mbps internet.. ITS FAST.

I thought only registered business addresses could get 100mb connections with dedicated lines (I work for Demon Internet).

Probably, mines in halls at uni. But considering they have a LOT of 100mb lines, I nearly always get 100mbps downloads if the server allows it, and my pings are nice and low too (usually not above 10ms to uk servers in cs for example).

That'd explain it. Uni's will have no trouble getting a dedicated low contention line. Because they need to download porn. I mean 'do research'

I have 8Mb, normal downstream is about 4/5 which is not so bad Really does not help when waiting for a full server

I usually get about 110 downstream which is 1Mb. Upgrading to 8mb in a week or so and, hopefully, 16mb in February.

My connection speed is 400mbps. I get web pages pretty much instantly, P2P programs download songs at about 250kbps, movies at about 400kbps, and software about 300. For torrenting I get around 1.5-2.2mbps. Just make sure the port your using when downloading is open both UDP (outgoing) and TCP (incomming) If you have Windows XP it's very simple to unblock the ports using windows firewall, check your help guide for instructions. Also, better LAN cables (If on highspeed) help, less internet related programs running (saves more bandwidth for the download) and sometimes it just needs a really healthy download.

usually at 200 kbps, then it will slowly go down to 150 kbps and spike to 200 again, most i ever got was 700 kbps. Least i got was on an old dial up connection, 2kbps lol

20kbps but when im lucky i got 100kbps why? i dont know xD it just happens

My ADSL modem connects at 6.5Mbit, but sadly with New Zealand's poor infrastructure, I can only get 2Mbit within NZ, and about 500kbit (off peak) from overseas. Often not enough to stream Youtube videos, especially during peak time.
Not to mention pings through the roof
