Quote from andy_bonjon :just starting my second year (of 5) and Brunel uni and im studying motorsport engineering.... Im doing it because i have always been insanely mad about motorsport and would like to have a chance of getting a job somewhere in the industry afterwards.

has anyone else done motorsport and got a job in it afterwards that could give any advice?? next year i hope to be doing a work placement and i will be writing to some places soon so i need as much help as i can get!! lol

From my experience at Brunel (doing core Mechanical Engineering, but knowing plenty of people who did Motorsport) I'd say the best thing to do would be to do core. Motorsport Engineering degrees are less well known, and will only ever have ANY credibility (if it gets any) in motorsport. On the off chance that motorsport doesn't work out I think lots of employers in non-motorsport engineering would be put off by the idea of 'specialist' degrees.

Bear in mind the worlds most successful engineers in F1 have either core Mech. Eng. degrees (at Masters level, which is why you are doing a 4 year course), or Aero. Eng degrees.

I'd also say don't be too worried about doing work experience. If you are in the lucky 10% who get a place they enjoy you'll benefit wonderfully, but if you, like most, get a shitty job making coffee for the professionals, and doing crappy jobs all day long, then it's more likely to put you off engineering than give you any valid experience. By all means apply, but if you can't find anything you don't want to do then just go straight into your final year.

And avoid Chris Brown at all costs, becuase he is an arse in the worst meaning of the word.
Quote from TAA :Penetration Testing

Yes I heard about that sort of testing at Uni, and computers are not used as far as I know

he is my personal tutor!!
Hmmm, thats okay. That probably means you know him well enough to keep away from him, so your major project won't be under him. And as he's your personal tutor he won't be your second reader either.

That is a GOOD thing

Oh, and watch out when he says 'this is in the exam, and that isn't', because he lies, and it will screw your exams. Not that I'm bitter at all...

Quote from Captain Slow :EDIT: ooh your at newcastle now. nice to have more lfsers in north east i say

I'm a Newcastle(ish) person, I'm actually down in Consett, but it's close enough :P

anyway back on topic... I finished college in June, but decided against uni as I've heard jobs come better with experience in the IT side of things, trouble is, I've been looking for 3 months and still not found a job, most of them want experience, so how am i ment to get experience if I can't find a job in the first place to get the experience... illepall
The 'Experience Required' part of a lot of IT job adverts didn't worry me tbh, my course has a placement scheme and around 70% of the students end up on placement from it, so hopefully I'll end up with a placement - ergo, with atleast *some* experience.
I finished Uni about 24 years ago with a degree in Electronics which just about introduced the PNP and NPN diode .... Dont think I'll go back

Now I head up the European operation of a Multi billion dollar Telecoms Manufacturer and no diodes in sight

Good luck to all going back .. its all worth it in the end.. hang in

Having never, yet, been to uni to study, I wouldnt know Notice how most of the bum^H^H^Hstudents ignored it

That's because most of the bums are doing something on computers, and lets face it, geeks never get any.

If we're posting time tables. Here is mine:

[Note: Odd means I only have it on odd weeks, this week was week 1, next week 2, etc]
I've already moved over to Freiburg (a nice town near the Schwarzwald, great for mountain biking ) and will go on to study physics and sports there (becoming a teacher later on). Still three weeks to go, so I don't have a timetable yet.
Yep I've started Uni. Sheffield.
