The online racing simulator
Quote from SmokeyBanjo :Wow. That's interesting. My system is 2.0ghz pentium 4. 2gb ram and 256mb graphics card. I've looked into a faster processor but my mother board only supports 400mhz bus speed.

Which graphics card exactly? There's a good chance that's struggling as well.
As someone else already said, you *will* need to run with low res textures with only 256MB.

To overclock a P4, you'd probably have to do it in the BIOS (likely by increasing the multiplier if it'll let you). Be careful though, you can easily fry it if you take it too far - small increments and do a stress test every time, keeping an eye on temps.
If you want to play it (slightly) safer and ebay, there were some 3.0GHz P4s @200MHz FSB. Check compatibility first though.

Oh, and you really don't need an i3 and dedicated graphics to run LFS - I've had a £70 AMD APU (CPU with integrated graphics) running the new Westhill at well over 100FPS on a 1440x900 screen. You'd probably even get away with the £50 one for 60+FPS at that kind of resolution.
Quote from SmokeyBanjo :Stuff

Read through your posts, it's an old pc from the attic running (Not stated but XP ?) an old OS.

What's running in the background ?, malware ?, 'stuff' ?, lama porn ?, web browser ?.
Try a clean install if you can, probably not but worth a try. Your running a G25, so stump up some $ for a core 2 duo/quad system. You can get them for stuff all, well worth looking at.

At the very least, run malwarebytes and ccleaner. Turn off any AV when your racing, same as iTunes or anything else. Take an informed look at services.msc and turn off everything not actually needed.
Be careful with that though, but it's a good learning curve.
Thanks everyone for your replies. Yea running XP. It was a fresh install when I rescued the system. It only has LFS, the G25 drivers/software and Firefox installed. That's it. I de-dusted it and redid the thermal paste, added fans etc, maxed out the memory and added the graphics card.
An Nvidia FX5600XT. It takes a frame rate hit if Firefox is open in the background so it's booted up and straight into LFS. Yes I know it's a Stone Age system and I was really surprised that it runs it at all.

It's a Dell system with a locked bios so no way I've found of changing the multiplier.

Thanks for the game suggestion cargame.nl maybe I need to downgrade my 'sim' software then

Have managed to leverage a small budget from the wife so a new system is closer than before. I think I'm gonna go with a G3258 so it's 1150 socket and can upgrade to an i5 in future if it's ever needed.

Thanks again everyone for your help. Amazing community
It wasn't a suggestion, I simply vaguely remembered the step from 640x480 to 800x600 in 1995. Such a big step. Now my phone has this resolution and the phone market already sees this as obsolete.

I just heard rumors that a sequel of Wacky Wheels will be there in 2016 => http://wackywheelsracing.com

Even more competition for LFS :o

But eehhh yeah. I generally am baffled that somewhere in the UK somebody is sitting with a computer from that time. Only the startup of that 'machine' must be amazing to witness. Must still have IDE harddisk interface with a spinning disk making loads of crackling noises.
Should of added a 'Lol' to my post.

Didn't take it as a suggestion. I was playing Geoff Cramond Grand Prix at 1024x768 in the late 90's

Whatever I run LFS at its more enjoyable than anything on my Xbox 360
Xbox 360? Dang there goes my imagination of your household Smile

* It doesn't matter much what you have/own. But going 20 years back... Ppff.. Eehh.. I dunno. Thats beyond what I expected here.
Haha. The hard drive is pretty quiet compared to how I remember them in the past but yea it's rocking IDE. Should be in a museum somewhere

Bought the 360 when the Xbone came out and people were selling them off cheap.

But again the Pentium was a stop gap just to get started with LFS. The only other PC in the house is a dual core laptop. Decent processor but crap graphics performance so that's no good either
Quote from SmokeyBanjo :Nvidia FX5600XT

That's why you have horrid fps. The geforce fx series are notorious for having very bad shader model 2 performance.

My friend had that one back in the day. Untill 2009 i think... then he bought a pc for 600€ that will be ok for next 10 years. My first graphics card running LFS was Nvidia 6600. It was pretty much fine back then except those horrible lags at the start of the race. But now, when I have this new pc (nvidia 760GTX) the fans dont even speed up during gameplay in summer.

This is getting much off topic, isnt it?
Quote from Dark[HUN] :That's why you have horrid

Results... Yeah you are right. It's not fully Direct X9c compliant. Only X9b. You bought a junk card SmokeyBanjo. Hopefully it was 2 pounds max.
No it was more like £12. No other non nvidia cards on eBay UK for less than £40 currently. I'd rather put that into a new system. At least that explains the problems. The last LFS 0.6J update gave me the ability to turn on a lot of the detail and keep a playable frame rate. This update has put me back to where I was on 0.6H. I'll live with it for a few months and build a new system.

Thanks again everybody. I'm amazed I'm getting so much help on such a waste of time museum exhibit computer. It's awesome. I'm guessing its nostalgia more than anything. Lol

Hmm, I had the impression that 0.6K was a compatible patch (it certainly doesn't change any physics I'm aware of), so until you upgrade to S3 I believe there's no need for you to use it - just stick with J, no?

(Btw, you could tell your wife that the electricity bills on your P4 are so bad that a new machine will pay for itself in a year! Wink)
Just told her that and all I got was a funny look. Haha

I could go back to 'J' but I couldn't access the multiplayer until id updated. So guessing id be stuck racing the AI.

Not great as I spend quite a bit of time racing a buddy of mine in a private server
Quote from Neilser :Hmm, I had the impression that 0.6K was a compatible patch

No,it's not compatible online - you can put exe file from J version into LFS folder of K version and have no problems (of course there is no S3),but you cannot join K servers with J version.
Aw, crap, that's a bummer :-/
No idea why the patch needs to be incompatible... Shrug

Edit: SmokeyBanjo: you say you can't even access a private server via the multiplayer system using J? That seems even more surprising. Are you sure the private server wasn't using K?
Patch needs to be incompatible because all previous versions doesn't have Rockingham. Simple as that.
Hello can i get one more unlock. I fail a little bit.
Quote from Scawen :Although S3 content is already being developed, we cannot provide a guarantee that it will be released.

I have a "hard" time comprehend this.

To me it sounds like; "give us all the moniez and then we're out yo!".

I mean,
Eric has been working on s3 content since atleast dec 2010 (searching through your post) and as far as I know Scirocco is the only content needed for the new tire physics to be released due to that its a real life car and your physics data didn't align up with it for the best experience ?

There has to be more s3 content finished during thoes 5 years thats not "affected" by the old tire physics ?
Everybody has different understanding of said phrase. It has been explained a few times in this thread, what it could mean. Read on.

Like where ? I read through scawen's all posts in here and theres not really an explination about why thers not any other content, exept "nothing is certain in life", wich just imo points more towards my read on it. Tongue

Im sure (atleast I hope after 5 years) they have more s3 content lying on the shelf ready to get released in the next update, but I would like to know why it didnt get released on the grand s3 release.

As i said, there has to be more fiction cars/tracks that arent affected by the new tire physics as the Scirocco.
I would guess the reason "nothing else is guaranteed" is they don't want to repeat what happened with Rockingham and Sirocco, If they say two more tracks coming or whatever people will keep bringing it up over and over stating they where expecting more tracks/cars until they get released.

Simplest way is say nothing is coming and no one can complain. I have every confidence there will be more content but I understand why they would phrase it like that

Well yeah, thats true. But instead it gets the revers effect and ppl complain that they pay £12 for 1 track. xD
There's no point complaining! If you think £12 is worth it for Rockingham, then buy. If you prefer more tracks for your money, then wait for us to complete some of the other things we are working on. Not too hard to understand, I think. Smile

We are very pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response to the Rockingham update and we look forward to getting back to work in the new year. Thank you for all the support and comments!

I personally arent complaining about that its just one track, I have read other posts/thread that are. x) Tho Im waiting to see more content before I buy becouse atm Im not playing as much anymore.

I was just curious as what I wrote erlier about 'why' it was just 1 track on the "grand s3 release".
Since there has to be more finished s3 content lying around that arent affected by the new tire physics. Smile
