What he said. ^ (the 4 runner I drove had a 22RE) The only thing wrong with it was rust. Mechanically everything worked like a dream (still pumped out massive amounts of heat on those cold mornings = win ). Snow.. I never got a chance to drive it in the snow.
Quote from mrodgers :Over here in the States, the older Toyotas, absolutely. I've beaten and severely abused Toyota trucks for 15 years and have never put a dime other than standard brakes and 1 clutch in mine (184k miles driven combined 3 Toy trucks by me, 419k miles combined overall on the trucks.)

Other people I know have beaten and severely abused Corollas and have never put a dime into them other than brakes.

My Toyota recommendation comes prior to the "OMG, MY CAR WON'T STOP" era of the mid 2000's.

I'm driving a '95 Celica with 191k miles on it, and it drives like new.
Quote from S14 DRIFT :Cheap means something old. Like, Ford Escort old. I cannot think of a single car you could get for about £1000 that has an engine smaller than a 1.3, which is 5 door and has good fuel economy..

Nonsense you can do much better than an Escort for that.

I'm currently rolling round in a 2001 1.2 5 door Clio, simple, cheap and gets 40+ mpg. I'd happily take a grand for it anyday...
A mate of mine had a 87-90 (dunno the exact year obviously) Corolla estate. It had done nearly half a million km and it ran quite smooth and I never noticed anything wrong with it. Only the interior was a bit ghastly but as means of transportation it was probably the best value for money ever. The guy who sold the Corolla to my mate (who happened to also be my mate) even promised a 12 month "warranty" (he worked at his dads garage at the moment, importing American muscle).

My brother also has a Corolla, a -90 saloon one. It's quite badly rusted though, the gearbox is quite broken, the suspension is so bad you can barely do 60 mph. A used car after all is only as good as how well the previous owners have taken care of it.

When I went about buying a used car I couldn't bear the thought of driving a Japanese crapbox. I know they're good cars and I wouldn't have spent as much on fuel had I got one. So because my criteria was space, ride comfort, safety and somewhat image, I've as a result got a 1995 Saab 900. I might sell it at some point, partly because it drinks quite much (though in that perspective we're alike) but mainly because it doesn't have a factory radio with ipod connectivity.
just look around and see what hatcback everyone else drives and get one of those
round here that would be a golf... reliable theres tons of them so theyre cheap and used replacements parts are dirt cheap as well
Quote from mrodgers :Wow, you're complete opposite experience than me. The Toyota trucks over here came with 1 engine option, the 22R (later the 22RE fuel injected) and they were a dream to work on. Tons of room.

It was a long time ago but IIRC the engine was a 1.6 with a turbo, and this was in the USA but it might've been an import.

I did that today and everybody drives either a Peugeot 307 or a Polo, but I'm not sure I trust French cars and used Polos seem too expensive.

There are a lot of cheap Corsas and Clios and Saxos and stuff, but they've probably all been thrashed to death by new drivers like Jakg, so I'm looking for something that those drivers wouldn't be seen dead in I think.

I don't know where to stop laughing.

Renault clio = lol already.
40mpg from a 1.2 = lol
£1000 = LOL.

And Kev's comment about "...thrashed about by new drivers like Jakg" made me laugh seriously hard.

#33 - Jakg

The mirror?

A friend picked up a 1.2 Clio, admittedly in 1999 flavor, for £500...
More that if you pay £1000 for a Renault Clio, you'd be a mug.

I would rather eat £1000 in 20p's than drive a Renault Clio, if Alex wants to bring £1000 in 20p's to my house I would happily eat them over being offered a ride or a drive in that piece of french poopie.

jack drives a rover that looks like its taken a crowbar to the face so im not exactly sure how ugly and or mundane youre trying to go here

Ah, you're right. I forgot about the turbo, though it was the 22RET, which is a 2.4L. If it was an import, then that is probably the case. For our time as old folks, starting in the 3rd generation, the trucks came with the 22R, and in 1988 moved to the fuel injected 22RE. The turbo was an option in 86 and 87.

You really have no say in cars since you had the chav tastic corsa.
Clio is a fine car and i would certainly consider them reliable.

Hmm, that is quite worrying. Maybe all of Britain's cheapest cars have been ruined by children already. I may have to buy a Multipla.

I could've sworn it was a 1.6, but maybe you're right. Either way it was a lousy engine in a lousy truck. It also had a lousy auto box to complete the set. I can't think of a single nice thing to say about it. Oh and the electric windows failed often, and would routinely be stuck open during torrential rainstorms. Terrible car! Oh and the heating was so useless we hardly used it in the winter, preferring a 1962 Volvo instead (which was also more reliable).
Quote from thisnameistaken :I may have to buy a Multipla.

comes with the added bonus that no one will ever even consider stealing it
I don't like the idea of having two passengers in the front though, that would be weird. I don't like having passengers at all if I'm honest. If I'm really honest it's because I don't like people at all.

how about this then which btw is entirely road legal in one of the hardest countries to get a reg plate in

might be a little low on luggage space for your bass though
I never knew Boris Becker was such a talented mechanic.

I also had no idea what any of them were saying.
Quote from 91mason91 :You really have no say in cars since you had the chav tastic corsa..

Had being the operative word.

Talking of Multiplas, my mum had one of the original shape JTD ones (top spec) and it was lovely. So what it's ugly, it's different and infinetly better than a Galaxy which just bores you to death. It also never broke down, where as both the Renault Scenis (51 plate) and the new Mercedes A Class (53 plate) broke down more than once.
Quote from thisnameistaken :I also had no idea what any of them were saying.

doesnt matter really the important thing is youll nver have to deal with passengers and its legal
Get a bike.

Quote from S14 DRIFT :I don't know where to stop laughing.

Renault clio = lol already.

It's a car, gets from A to B perfectly well, cheap to put fuel in, maintain, tax and insure. I don't need a fashion statement or iPod connectivity.

Do you ever stop to think before you type? The main reason people buy small engined cars and the industry as a whole is moving towards smaller engines is because of their fuel economy/emissions performance. Unless you sit on the motorway all day larger engines will not give better fuel economy.

It is perfectly possible to pick up a 10 year old car with a 1.2 petrol engine for peanuts that will do 40mpg if you don't drive like a chav...

Clio 8V (45), Clio 16V (47), Corsa (44), 106 (44), Rover 25 (41), Fabia (47), Punto (49), Perodua Kelisa (55), Fiesta (40), Micra (47)

My point exactly...
Or a bicycle.
Quote from Forbin :Get a bike.

I concurr.

Quote from ajp71 :Stop stop stop talking that blah, blah blah. La la, la la.

All of which are combined MPG (and when they were new, not when there's 80,000 miles of wear and abuse under their wheels) and around town they would get 35 tops, where you can buy all manner of larger engined cars (ahem Focus) which do more.

If you want economy, buy a diesel.

Or a bicycle.
