Folding@Home
I searched for a folding thread but it didn't come up with anything so I thought I'd make one. So, the question is, does anyone on here fold? (If you don't know what I am talking about, check it out here) If we do have people who do, why don't we have a Live For Speed folding group? I think we should.
Does this use BOINC?

I have taken part in finding 'little green men'(SETI), but not this. What annoys me in these is that I have to generate yet another account with yet another password...which I cannot remember after 1 week

Actually, it requires no registration at all. AFAIK, all you have to do is either enter a name (for the statistics shown online) or you can be anonymous. It's quite easy actually, and yes it does use BOINC.
I used to fold but our electricity bill is pretty high as it is so I don't really do it anymore.
Heh, not ran F@H in years, I used to run a little F@H farm during college, having every PC in my house running away at it, really ramped up the power bill.

Used to, but cba because of temperature issues, my old 3700 can't compete with a folding farm anywho

Hello. I've created a Live for Speed team, so if anyone is folding, please consider joining and help us move into the top 100.

Project homepage: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Main

The team number is: 135959
Team stats page: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cg ... ampage&teamnum=135959

For those that are new and want to join, I recommend getting one of the high performance clients from here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

If you have an ATI 26xx+ or nVidia 8xxx or better, I recommend the GPU client as it is quite a lot faster than the CPU client.

There's no need to register or anything, you just enter your desired username and the team id in the client, and that's it.
It made me feel sort of open. I don't like these sort of things.
if my PS3 is doing nothing i let it run FoH
I'd rather send them the money I'd save on electricity than run my machines flat out all the time. Cba to have fans whirring at full speed and heat being pumped out into the house, when someone else with a folding farm can do 100x times what I could.

Same here, if my ps3 isnt touched for about 20 mins while on it goes to that.

I'm letting a computer at work doing the work, so don't have to worry about that.
Anyone knows exactly how this work, wondering if i should run it via PS3 when i'm not home, are we really "helping" anything or what?

Well you'd be helping to do simulations of protein folding which helps find cures for various diseases. You can read about it on their website. You're basically helping their research.
Makes no difference whether you're doing as much as a farm could or not. That farm + you is still better than just that farm.

I keep meaning to set this up and I keep forgetting. I've now got it running on my work computer and I'll be setting it up when I get home too. I'll never be able to actually help by finding a cure for anything, so I might as well have a go at something worthwhile with this
i thought it was for finding resolutions for illnesses like alzheimer etc
Quote from Scrabby :i thought it was for finding resolutions for illnesses like alzheimer etc

In a way it is, they need to find how proteins fold so they can work out how to prevent them from folding incorrectly, the result of which causes illnesses.
I have been a F@H member for years in the tweakguides.com team, I haven't been folding much for a while now, so I thought let's see if LFS had a team and I noticed this topic, but sadly I see that this team is dead with no production for a long time. I also noticed that many of us are a little bored of LFS atm, so I thought lets start an healthy competition with all that unused CPU/GPU power on F@H while waiting for the next patch....

I have setup a new team so that everyone can start at the same time, but before we do that I like to ask a mod if I am allowed start a clean topic to advertise this new little competition for a good cause? (also noticed an other dead topic on the subject which could be removed I think http://www.lfsforum.net/showth ... ;highlight=folding%40home )

If not I will post it here....

Also I like to ask the guys who have folded before if they would resume their work in this new team?

New topic proposition:
Quote : Folding@Home LFS Community team (competition for a good cause)

I noticed that many of you were bored of LFS, so that means that a lot of processor power is wasted during those times you’re not playing, so I thought let’s start an healthy competition to make use of our CPU’s or GPU’s when not playing…

Don’t know if many of you knows about Folding@Home, it a project which consist in using unused CPU power to fold proteins which play an important role in disease like Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers. The idea is to offer scientist a way to realize projects which they couldn’t do with a super computer by using 100.000’s CPU’s around the world

What is protein folding?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help scientists studying these diseases by simply running a piece of software.
Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

This is not new and it plays an important role now, check the result page here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Papers

Personally I have been folding for years for the Tweakguides.com team and I have folded a total of 21.921 WU (work units or projects) or 410774 points. In the good time we’ve managed to get in the top 100 teams for weekly production of WU’s (top 100 today would need 19.000 points a week now http://folding.extremeovercloc ... eam_list.php?s=&srt=6 ) which was really special for such a small team considering that some had 1000’s of members…..and I believe LFS community would do even better...
http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi ... age&username=Framaris
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cg ... eampage&teamnum=50446

Each WU are different and will take different amount of time to realize, so different amount of points will given function of difficulty. So since we all like competition and we all have our PC running most of the day doing close to nothing, I thought it would be a good idea to create an LFS community team.

We will compete as team in the middle of 1000’s of others and as individuals for the general stats and inside our team, so if you care to join me, here are some useful information’s:

Team F@H page: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Team number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Installation guide: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Guide
FAQ: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ

High performing beta clients downloads: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther
Check user name: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download#ntoc2
Get Passkey: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

Handy stats websites (team was just created so it is not there yet):
http://kakaostats.com/
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/

To participate in this competition, some work will be required on your part, there are different clients you can use (single CPU, multi core CPU’s, GPU’s and even PS3), some of those will be less easy to use but will produce bigger rewards in compensation….care to compete for a good cause?

Happy folding!

THX in advance for answering!

PS: I know Folding is not a competition, but competition is always a great motivation and that's how we got in the top 100 with the tweakguides.com gaming community.....
If no one is interested in competing for this, I'll probably join the team Arco created....
Yeah, I'd be up for this

What's the team number?
#20 - arco
Hey Framaris. If you want, I can transfer ownership of the team I created to you. Just let me know.
Good to hear Crashgate!

Thx arco, but all is ready, we just need the go from an admin...we'll give them a bit of time to answer...or we'll just start from here...
F@H and SETI@H are cancers on the planet and must be eliminated.
Quote from bunder9999 :F@H and SETI@H are cancers on the planet and must be eliminated.

Only ignorant f#%ks think so.
Sorry if I say it was an uneducated comment...

Of course Global warming and energy usage are definitely important issues, and I won't sidetrack the entire thread to debate this issue. But it's worth considering that the energy spent folding is going to be spent somewhere by someone - even if it's done by supercomputers in laboratories. The search for curing certain diseases and understanding the human body better is a very important one which is going to continue unabated, and by distributing the work it simply speeds it up.

It should also be considered that we waste an inordinate amount of physical and human resources - and hence add a lot more to global warming - in the continuing treatment of diseases which could otherwise be cured for good. Imagine how much less energy could be used in the future if we find cures or simple treatments for major long-term diseases like Cancers, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, AIDS and so forth. The amount of energy used to produce the medicines, machines and treatments for these diseases is huge, so folding could be a potential way to prevent even larger energy wastage in the future.

I know very little of F@H, could you give me an example of an achievement that F@H has achieved?
