Quote from Shadowww :SamH, I was explaining mine mother how to use Windows (it was XP) about two days. Then I gave up and installed Ubuntu (it was 8.04). She didn't asked a single question! + Ubuntu has translation to over 90 languages.

It's a good thing she has you, because as soon as it goes tits up she's screwed. You know it's true.

My dad's a complete imbecile with computers but he can get around XP as long as you plot a route for him. Some people just aren't able to take on board what a computer is and/or how you go about using it. Some other people will just never be able to learn to drive. Others will never be able to learn to dance. There is no definitive "anyone can do this" in life.

[edit] I've said it before many times, but I'll say it again: I'm no fan of Gates or of Windows. But I do have the sense to recognise that, if it hadn't been for these, the internet probably would never have become as popular as it is and the percentage of homes with useful personal computers would be a fraction of what it is.

Ubuntu can be reinstalled in 6 (or 7?) mouse clicks, so that's not a big problem - she can do it herself. And only program she needs, Firefox, comes in default install.

You couldn't teach your mum to double-click on a Firefox icon in XP? Yowzer! Even after 2 days of trying?!

[edit] Or.. did you try to teach your mum to use Office, email, some kind of Excel application etc in XP and just in the end, resort to Ubuntu with Firefox, and forget the rest of the stuff she might do?
Windows XP Home: with all service packs and Automatic Updates on, but planning installing a Distribution of Linux to go alongside it.
Quote from SamH :I'm no fan of Gates or of Windows.

To be honest though Windows has been getting a lot better (with more user friendliness and Windows 7) now that Gates has buggered off.
Quote from Foilpact :

So, due to the stupid price difference, A £400 PC would easily out perform a £1250 Mac...

Lol Triple Post.

Anyway, I had this computer built by my Dad for just over 100 pound, it easily outperforms any Mac up to 1000 pounds.

What about reinstalling windows and firefox after some nasty virus?
+ In Ubuntu, it's 1 click
+ In Ubuntu, Firefox is available even from LiveCD/LiveUSB (e.g. in case HDD got faulty and I am over 9000 miles away)
XP Pro on all 3 of my computers.

Name me a half decent game title that is fully OSX compatible.

C&C Red Alert 3?
World of Goo?
Age Of Empires 3?
COD 4?
Doom 3?
Quake 4?
Guitar Hero 3?
GH:WT?
Flatout 2?

I fail to see your point. As COD4 is more than half decent and I just added more to prove you wrong.

Also, since when did Macbooks only have GMA's? My dads iBook (PowerPC Macbook) had a Radeon 9200, which at the time was decent. The Macbook Pro/Powerbook series has always had decent graphics chips in them. I fail to see any point any of you are making.

Mac OS is clearly better. It can do everything you ever want it to, and isn't prone to getting some sort of infection by simply connecting to the internet. (Think XP, and Vista). OSX is secure enough to be connected directly to the internet without any sort of router or firewall to protect. Try that with Windows.

Oh wait, Windows will just cough and die due to 3.2 million viruses.

And Sam, I've been able to hook up any printer to my Mac and have it work flawlessly in OSX within seconds, I can email from a fresh install, and I can do a hell of a lot more with my Mac than I could with any PC, well... other than Viruses, but that's the one thing that Windows does well.

Vista is safer
As I've written before, Vista is a more secure operating system than Mac OS X. Mac OS X was easier to crack in a recent hacking contest. And security researcher Dino Dai Zovi had this to say about Vista versus Mac OS X when it comes to security:
I have found the code quality, at least in terms of security, to be much better overall in Vista than Mac OS X 10.4. It is obvious from observing affected components in security patches that Microsoft's Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) has resulted in fewer vulnerabilities in newly-written code.
The Mac is closed; Vista is open
Any person or company who wants to build a PC with Vista on it, and either sell it, or use it themselves, is perfectly free to do so, as long as they buy the operating system. Try to do that with a Mac, and you'll be spending some face time with Apple's attack dog lawyers.

PCs Are More Cost-Effective. Macs are still priced too high. Tell me you don’t agree. And if you don’t, then you’ve been hypnotized, too. The Apple Stores and apple.com have created a one-world pricing universe for all things Mac, while in the PC world there are multiple manufacturers, tons of retail stores, loads of sales and rebates, and plenty of cheap refurbished parts on the market that people can use to make their own dream machines. Apple’s cheapest laptop is still more than $1,000. You can get a PC laptop for $500 at Best Buy. Yes, they’re different in quality -- but an eight-year-old who needs to plunk out a book report doesn't need 0.13 inch-thin wafers of aluminum. Families, non-nerds, and most of the adult world need less-expensive options, and for $500, the only thing Apple sells that has a screen and reads email is an iPhone or an iTouch.

Apple Is Fascist. You can’t build a Mac easily, and you can’t really customize them, either -- not unless you want to invalidate your warranty. They’re like fancy sports cars run on a single computer chip, fixable only at your dealer for a set price. Hacking a Mac feels like rape to fanboys, and it can be done, but with a trip to Fry’s Electronics and a little lunch money in the PC world you can basically soup up your own Windows roadster. That’s not appealing to most people -- but there are amazing things you can do on PCs with homemade software that usually isn’t OS X-compatible whatsoever. Waiting for a Mac patch of a file-sharing program, cell phone patcher, or whatever your freedom-cherishing heart desires can feel like exile. Sure, Macs have fewer viruses, worms, and crapware -- but they also have expensive, difficult-to-mod machines that become obsolete in a few short years. The same thing happens to PCs, too. And they're cheaper.

It's Still a PC World Out There. Just in case you want to run your world business with a healthy dose of cheap labor from Pakistan (or, with the declining dollar, Alabama), just remember that it’ll be Windows you’ll need to run it on. But Macs run Windows! Yeah, I know. The Mac is a fine, high-end Windows machine. And it’s really cool that Macs run Windows XP. But the real issue is, when will OS X be good enough to not need to run Windows at all? That ability to boot up XP is not so much a Mac victory as it is Bill Gates’ triumph. He now has compatibility with his competitor, which was the whole idea in the first place. Apple should follow suit and make iLife available to Windows users in its entirety. Of course, they won’t. And every time I have to boot up Windows to load some obscure piece of software I want to run just because I can, it reminds me that OS X can’t run it. Apple’s design is the slickest around, but what I want to see is an even more wide-open computer, one where everything it does is better than a PC…not just most things. Until then I’m going to envy those PC users just a little bit. All 96.5 percent of you."

oh and heres a website with 32 reasons why windows is better then mac

Dawesdust, mine dual-bootable Seven is running ~3 month without any antivirus and internet, and I don't have any viruses. What am I doing wrong?

All I did was ask a question.

Your obsessive defence of Mac against anything regardless makes you as much of a 'fanboy' as any other person who has posted in this thread.

Quote from Migz :Apple Is Fascist.

Godwin's law!
Vista is only safer because they let users do 1 thing:

They can move their mouse, and even then it requires a minimum of 3 UAC prompts per 100 pixels. This ensures they can't install viruses ebcause they get pissed off and throw it out a window before they can hit the start button.

The next one is hilarious, as OSX is more open than Vista... I offer a challenge... go and find me even a PORTION of Vista's source code up for download. Oh wait, you can't do that? OSX... http://www.opensource.apple.com/

PC's are cheaper yes, but only because they're shittier. They run everything as good as a 386 does, so no wonder they cost 1/2 the cost of a Mac.

Apple is fascist... Hm... lets see... I go buy a Mac Pro I can replace: GFX Card,RAM,Processor, add some PCI-X cards in,Hard drives.

Laptops you can replace: RAM and Harddrive, but look at a PC notebook, that's all you can replace there too.

And you can mod a lot of stuff in OSX, EVERY Icon you can think about can be changed, the look can be customized to exactly how you want, the feel, everything can be chaged to be good.

The warranty claim is bunk, as RAM, Hard Drive and other things do NOT violate your warranty (only actually replacing a critical part such as logic board or LCD will), and even PC's that are build by manufacturers, opening the case will usually violate the warranty on it.

And the guy that says he has to boot up windows every time... if he really needs to use some app thats 15 years old like every Windows program, VMWare can virtualize Windows faster than any Quad-Core PC out there, on a single core Mac. Because Mac's are more powerful.

Next attempt plz.
Quote from Shadowww :Dawesdust, mine dual-bootable Seven is running ~3 month without any antivirus and internet, and I don't have any viruses. What am I doing wrong?

Are you connected directly to the internet (not through a router), and is firewall and AV disabled?

OSX wouldn't get attacked at all, Windows tends to fill up with viruses like a pornstar in a bukkake video does with semen.

So, when are you PC Fanboi's gonna give up, and realize that OSX is better?
Quote from dawesdust_12 :They run everything as good as a 386 does, so no wonder they cost 1/2 the cost of a Mac.

You sure 'bout that?

I doubt a 386 could run LFS at 90fps, this PC seems to be able to.

Thang is you can't put a definate 'speed' on a PC, some are mega fast, others not so, some PCs are crap, others are great.

You're obviously just trying to wind people up, I betcha don't even believe half the things you're saying, the really sad thing is that as per usual people are taking the bait. I hope you're enjoying the attention you're getting.

Either that or you're just very ignorant.
Where's Windows 3.11 on that list? That's what I'm running :P

I'm running Vista on my desktop and Xp on my laptop
Quote from 5haz :Either that or you're just very ignorant.

You may say that.

I just say I'm a lot smarter than everyone else who thinks that PC's are any good.

LFS?

Meh, to each his own. You can share an opinion, some explanations, but that`s all you`ll ever be able to do.. Nobody is going to take it blindly as right, instead of bullshit and fanboy talk.. they might, but only if they are open minded enough to try it for themselves, if they have the means and curiosity.

Btw, is this OS X os running on regular joe's pc, without needing some special chipsets or something? Cause i would try it at least to see what`s this all about.. but there's no way in hell i`d reach for pocket to buy a imac, macpro or something.
How was that S14, yarr harr diddly dee an os ?
I bet OSX will not be able to run LFS(if it runs it at all) at 300-500 fps as Vista/XP does.
Trying OSX on PC's is horrible because Apple doesn't make kernel extensions for such ancient things.

OSX does run LFS too anyways, I just forgot to put it on there, becuase I never play it anymore.
Quote from dawesdust_12 :Are you connected directly to the internet (not through a router), and is firewall and AV disabled?

No firewall, no AV, no router.

Nah I think you're just one big wind up tbh.

There has to be some reason why PCs have the majority share of the market, more compatibility is the reason, and thats a fact, wether you chose PC or Mac has nothing to do with intelligence.
Quote from dawesdust_12 : VMWare can virtualize Windows faster than any Quad-Core PC out there, on a single core Mac. Because Mac's are more powerful.

I beg to differ. And here I shall provide some things to try on a single core Mac to compare against my quad core PC.

1: Encode me some video. Go on, I dare you to encode video faster on your single core Mac than I can on my quad core PC.

2: Do some folding. Not only do I have a 3-core advantage on you, I also have the option of folding natively on my graphics card if I so wish.

3: I fancy running a few VMs at the same time. Can your Mac do that without losing tons of performance?

And it's not "Mac's". It's "Macs". Grammar is important, you know that.
