Hi ladies,

I recently modded my wheel to have more buttons on it. Now I mapped the most important commands to them so I don't have to lean forward anymore to reach my keyboard.

I wanted to make it real cheap, so I just took a non-vibrating gamepad for €6,- and my wheel. Actually the pad you see here is not the one I used, I just took this photo after I've ripped it apart :-)

http://puff-insel.shipdown.de/ ... /wheelmod/wheelmod002.jpg

I took off the wheelcover (be careful if you want to open your rgt, 2 of the screws are under the eye-shaped thrustmaster sign) and lubed the gears while it was open... that helped a lot! The ff is much more exact right now, and fast countersteering is a pleasure!

That's the inside of the pad. I put a bit of solder everywhere I wanted to put a cable later.
The cable itself was an old floppy cable I took apart, cost nothing and I could group it by taking e.g. 2x3 wires for a group of 3 Buttons. I know I could have used only 4 wires (3 for every anode + 1 cathode), but since I have enough space I just took the lazy way.

here you can see how I did the pov. It's important to be careful when soldering on circuit boards, if you stay on the board too long the conductive layer will pop off...

http://puff-insel.shipdown.de/ ... /wheelmod/wheelmod013.jpg

count the buttons :-)
Here you can see how I grouped them

http://puff-insel.shipdown.de/ ... /wheelmod/wheelmod018.jpg

drilled the holes for the buttons

http://puff-insel.shipdown.de/ ... /wheelmod/wheelmod019.jpg

I screwed the buttons into the cover, then I glued them all in. The circuit board was also glued into place. The wide silver tape you see next to the gears is only to prevent any cable from getting into them. Again I could have used a more elegant way to solve this (metal or plastic plates) but I didn't want to spend any extra time or money on this.

all ready and working fine :-) I even drilled a hole for the red led.
The only thing what I still had to do was mapping the buttons using joy2key.

Now I can drive securely without having to touch my keyboard again

feel free to comment and criticize.

Oh yeah, butz, this is a neat mod :-)
Why did you put the buttons to the wheel cover and not make a button box?

greetz

der butz
Well butz, I have no available space for a separate box, also I wanted to have the buttons as near as possible at the wheel itself.
Thanks for the comment, butz!

ehmm.. nice mod, but are you talking to yourself? illepall
I tend to do that sometimes :-)

No, really, it seems like I'm the only one in the world who has NO logitech wheel... so it isn't interesting to anyone.

But let's see, maybe I open a "who else has the rgt pro" thread :-)

#6 - Dru
neat conversion

oh btw - i haven't got a logitech wheel either, i have just a cheapo €10 MS FF wheel and pedals
Funny 2 controllers in one
thx ladies :-)

I could put a whole keyboard into that, but I think that would be REALLY confusing then

Those few more buttons are a great addition and easier to learn than it seems.

Superb Der Butz,

Good job!!

Now all you need to do is vacuum the carpet and get those stains out

ok, I just got one of these puppies, RGT Clutch edition ... have not set it up yet (just got it sitting in my office 'til i get home.) any advice on settings for the FF? what feels best? any other advice is also welcome.

thanks.
I had this steering wheel, but i think it's crap. It broke down after about a month.
I already had some noises coming out of the clutch pedal after a week, and after 2 weeks the Wheel itself started squeeking. A few days later the left flappy paddle broke down, and that's when i decided to get a G25
Hasn't any of this occured to you yet?

Anyway, very nice mod! I can remember myself also being short of buttons with that wheel.
LOL. King bodge

Nice :0

You seem to have much money, can I get some? Have you ripped your wheel apart like a hammersmith and couldn't send it in like normal people would do?

No, my wheel worked flawlessly for over 3 years, then one of the shifter paddles went weak. I called the guys from thrustmaster support and they immediately wanted to send over a bag of paddles and screws, so I could fix it myself (I've been out of warranty for over a year!!). Anyway, a little bit of 2k-glue and a small steel pin did the job pretty well.

I'm using the wheel (I shall call it oliver) in a normal manner. You on the other hand seem to be more of a gross-motorist, and if you can break the thrustmaster wheel I'd advise you not to use the shifter on the G25 as well :-).
Ah, there yould be something else as well! I guess you use the flappy paddles, only 2 pedals (with both feet, VERY pro!!) and you've set your wheel to 120° turning ratio! THEN the G25 is TEH best wheel you can get. Be sure to get "G 25" somewhere around your player name! :ices_rofl

G25>RGT.

Sure, it is a crappy wheel, considering it's jelly-made shifter and all...but hey, at least it doesn't fall apart within first 2 weeks of usage.

Thrustmaster should rename it. "Thrustmaster DIY wheel for logitech haters" would be a much better name

Thrustmaster aint the same thing from the T1/T2 to Ferarri FF wheel days anymore.
Yeah what Thunderhead said.

And besides, i have been gentle with it. How can you know that?
I only used the flappy paddles when i was doing the single seater racing, and the really crappy sequential shifter when i was racing in road cars WITH the clutch. How would you know if i only use the gas and brake pedal. Are you spying on me or something?
You must drive like a real granny then if it lasted for 3-4 years with you, which is entirely possible as you're 30+

I don't really understand how you can think of me being a motorist, when i'm only 15 (nearly 16) and going to school?

The story went different though. I bought the RGT pro at a online shop. When it broke down, they told me to send it back, but after a few weeks they sent me a message saying they couldn't get their hands on a new RGT.
The only thing they COULD still get was the logitech G25. However, they still owed me the money from the RGT, so i only needed to pay an extra 100 euros for the G25..

Well here i am, happily using it, WITH the clutch AND the Shifter (unless the car is sequential, or single seater ofcourse). At the rotation degrees set to every different car. And nothing broke down yet after the first 4 weeks. that IS quality, unlike the RGT pro Clutch ''crap'' edition.
