Gradually Decreasing FPS
I've noticed that as time has gone by, my FPS in LFS has gradually decreased. I'm almost presenting you with a timeline of worsening FPS (:tilt:

When I first started playing, I got anything between 90 and 200 FPS, then I discovered Antialiasing and got about 60 - 70 FPS (obviously, AA will lower the FPS). Now, my FPS is down to about 30, or 50 at best.

One thing I have noticed is that all the LFS patches that are supposed to be more efficient and increase FPS seem to actually have slightly decreased my FPS.

I have defragmented my HDD (If that actually makes any difference), and it was 30% fragmented when I did it (I assume that's bad?), and after the defrag it was still 23% fragmented (that still seems bad...). My HDD is fairly full, but again, I dunno if that makes an awful lot of difference (130GB used of 170GB)

Maybe it's just because my computer's getting more knackered as the days go on (although it's only 1.5 years old :shrug.

My PC specs:

Intel Core 2 Due T7300, 2.00 GHz
2GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT

Any suggestions as to how I could get better performance? Thanks
I have the same problem as you, my FPS has hit rock-bottom and I'm not using any hi-res textures at all. Problem might be the memory, but I didn't put anything new in the computer (except a new hard drive and the LFS test patches).
the only thing i can think of is it is something to do with page file size etc, but thats only a guess really

as for the defrag, do it once more and see if it drops any more

Hi-res skin , or Textures decrease fps
Mine did exactly the same, so after some advice, i completely deleted LFS, Re-downloaded and installed a fresh copy of LFS, and my fps is back to how it always was.
Just disable AA and FPS will increase.
Guessing you're running Windows. The only OS that I know of that has the uncanny abilty to gradually slow your PC down with shit. Try disk cleanup, de-frag, cleaning of temporary files, etc.

Check your CPU cooler isn't clogged with dust which increases temperatures and reduces speed.

Yea, the main purpose is to do this, but remember - in recent patches there were also some graphical updates, mainly South City and Blackwood, so it also can be this. However I think, there must be something wrong with PC, because this big decreasion of FPS isn't usual.
So, maybe you just used some textures which also lowered your FPS, or something like this. I can understand this, but there are so many things which could do it. I personally haven't noticed any fps decreacions, but the thruth is I've never measured it. I'd suggest to scan your PC and make sure you have not any bad stuff in there. Your PC specs definitely aren't that bad, for 30 fps...
Agree with Mysho, and as time goes by, and your last windows installation is getting older, you're installing a lot new things (browser updates, new photoshop for example or anything else), your OS is getting slower and slower, I think this can affect it.

Yea but, to my knowledge, that doesn't really affect gaming performance that much. Lots of pieces of files all over the place DO hugely affect boot times and loading times for games/programs, but they shouldn't have any affect on the ability of the CPU/GPU to render a game.

UNLESS all those programs you've installed/uninstalled have left all kinds of processes running that still start when you boot and are eating away at your CPU and RAM. How many processes are running when you do Ctrl+Alt+Del and bring up the task manager?
I use a laptop.

Specs
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHZ
2.00GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600
Windows Vista Home Premium
110GB HDD (28GB free)

--------

These specs get me around 100fps, but not on fully high quality. I have AA off, it doesn't enhance my experience so much that I become a champion, even if it does get jaggier. Try toning down your settings and sacrificing visual for performance, its better

Or get the Best of Both Worlds and settle somewhere in the middle.

Yeah, that's true.

And this is how I meant it.

90 Processes. CPU usage is about 5%, and about 15 - 20% when LFS is running

Now that I've been using AA for ages, LFS actually looks completely different, as well as a pixelated mess when I turn AA off. And also it's a hassle to turn it back on when doing screenshots / skin previews.

Oh noes... not Hannah Montana

Btw, How much of an effect does disk fragmentation have? And is 23% fragmented bad?
I use a laptop, too, but my fps is 8-30 usually, which is kinda strange.

Specs:
AMD Turion 64 X2 TL56, 1.80GHz
2GB Ram
Windows Vista Home Premium
ATI Radeon Xpress 1200, 128MB
92GB HDD, 38GB free

Fresh downloaded LFS. I think these specs atleast are supposed to give me a smooth run.
edit: irrelevant.
lololol I have 60ish. Damn those PC's bought from PC world. The only things left on it are the HD and one of the DVD drives. I've changed everything but all the shit still remains!

If you get a propper PC from a decent place you don't get all the 'freeware' bundle packages, such as 1 months free <antivirus>, stupid programs you'll never use and the like. Should all be classed as adware and spyware tbh.

So am I the only one that finds Hannah Montana hot?
You find Miley Cyrus hot? She's the biggest underage pornstar in the world. Pictures of her damn near butt naked in a shower aged 15, and from what I hear she's been aproached by the Playboy dude. Last time I checked she was going out with a 22 year old. That's just damn wrong. Girl has talent, I'll reluctantly say that, but she's nothing but a disney channel pimp-cum-slut. And all these damn teenage girls look up to her. Younger than that, even. 8 and 9 year olds! What kind of influence is that on such young minds? No wonder we have so many sluttish 14 year olds who look, act and dress like they're twice their age and looking to get laid. </rant> :hide:
Who is Miley Cyrus? I'm on about Hannah Montana?
Actually, looking at the names of some of the processes, I'm wondering if they're needed at all

Some useless sounding ones:
  • Symantec Service Framework
  • Creative Media Explorer Detector
  • Creative MediaSource Detector
  • Creative Sync Manager
  • iTunesHelper Module (stupid brother and his iPod Touch)
  • VAIO Update (why? I'm not installing any updates)
  • VAIO Camera Utility Server

Miley Cyrus is her real name. Hannah Montana is like her stage name.
But they look totally different?!
Unless my sources are mis-informed (Which is some dude's Youtube videos!)

From some random Disney website

Quote :Disney fansite dedicated to talented actress and singer Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana

Maybe you have some of these in Autostart?

Yes, you do - my HP laptop (from laptopsdirect) came full of all sorts of shit.

I would always try tweaking services on Vista - i.e. "Tablet PC Input Service" is useless unless you have a touch-screen, and uses 100MB of RAM!
