I imagine the posture behind a wheel takes time to get used to...
Elbows lifted, more pressure to the shoulders...
Using the keyboard i feel very comfortable leaned back with my elbows resting on the chair's '' frame '' or ''arm holders'' (don't know what's it called).
Where do you have your wheel attached? On the desk that's meant for the keyboard and is pulled out from under the main desk ?
I guess that takes a bit of adjusting before you feel comfortable, but i'll have to try a wheel myself to see...

Hey, guys, what are the most popular wheels out there...
I was searching the net a bit and it seems to me as though the Logitech wheels offer the best quality...What are your opinions on this matter ?
I know, eventually i'll have to try it myself...Also, reading the forum threads i can find people mostly using logitech wheels ( momo racing force, formula ''something'',...)

''Fujiwara''- i'll be on this weekend pretty sure, see ya..

I was assuming, yes, ORION...
Just gave it a try with this thread
I'm just not sure yet whether to get me a wheel or not. I've never raced with a wheel yet...was never really that into it, but maybe it's not a bad idea to try it...
Maybe i'll go and check the wheels at some local store.

Quote from SparkyDave :Hi Janm need said it all ^

you havn't said what agp mobo(chipset) you have or what cpu you plan to use in it.
However theres no real improvement in perfomance between PCIEx and AGP , especially in LFS (DX8) although in the future data throughput from chipset to GFX card will increase and this was the main reason for mnufacturers changing the format (and of course money)

SD.

Hi, SparkyDave.
Thanks for letting me now..
I have a sis760 foxconn motherboard and currently using ati 9600 pro.
It works ok. It's just..., i've been using this cofiguration for over a year now and i'd like to try something more powerful... nvidia maybe...or put more ram into it... not sure yet.

Thanks, danowat.
I myself use a ATI 9600 Pro. Runs ok ( approx. 92 fps in lfs), but i just wonder what would be best to make the gaming experience even better, though it seems like i won't be playing anything else than lfs for quite a while.
Maybe i could get me a better monitor first. I have an old Powerpoint 15''.
Ram is ok, i guess, for lfs (512mb), amd 64 3000 processor too.
Is an agp card still worth the buy ?

Hi, guys.

I have a motherboard which doesn't have a pci-e slot and i can't decide whether to buy a better agp card, say 6600gt, or change the motherboard and get me the pci-e version of this card or any other pci-e card...
Financially the first option suits me better...
Is the pci-e performance really that much better than the agp ?
I mean in real gaming, not in specs. Can you really see the difference?

I'd appreciate any replies very much.
Thanks guys.

Jan

Wish you good racing.

This is some effort...or just copy/paste

Anyway thanks, man.
Are there any fast keyboarders here?

Hi everyone.
I'm still a demo racer.

I've been playing lfs for about a month now and i've enjoyed setting faster times very much...
Right now the fastest lap according to my fastest sector times would be around 1:32.3x. My current pb is 1:32.59.

Well, since everyone here is mostly a ''mouser'' or a ''wheeler'', i was wondering if those of you who use ''keyboard-no help'' option could share their thoughts about setting the car and going around blackwood as fast as possible...
I have a good set, based on worm's. Did some additional steer rate modifications and feel quite comfortable with it.

Anyway, just wanted to find keyboarders, since it seems to be very uncommon( understandably) for most guys to use keyboard to race.
But since i don't own a wheel yet and my driving stile is much too agressive for the mouse, that's where i'm at right now.

Looking forward to any ''feedback''.
Here's a replay of a reasonable lap of mine...
Wish you good racing.

Quote from NotAnIllusion :Nah it works for demo users all the same, make sure you entered the correct LFS path in AFS:

Open AFS, under View>Preferences ensure you have the path to your actual LFS installation.

Had an older version... It should work now, i guess...
Thanks.

don't have a ''Preferences'' option under ''View''...only zoom in, zoom out, move left, move right...No preference option anywhere in afs...

Sorry for interrupting the disscussion...Just wanna know if this Analyze for speed programm is for licensed users only? I'm a demo racer and when i run the programm it says ''can not load a track for Blackwood''...
I've downloaded the meshes...And i've output the lap data for the laps desired(.raf files). Thanks for the reply.

Quote from Chaos :well i can imagine driving alone on the keyboard, but what i can't imagine is racing... how do you handle if someone hits your rear wheel or when you find yourself having to drive across curbs, etc. or you find yourself in any other unexpected situation, that requires quick and precise steering input?

I know it's not a prob with mouse/wheel, because you can steer as fast you manage, but with keyboard you are limited to what you have set in options...

Yes, you got a point there... A keyboard is not the best option in such cases. The keys sensitivity can't be set both for quick steering in situation of spinning or loosing the rear and for clean racing, smooth turning...Maybe a good setup is possible for the keyboard to be more ''allround'', but i'm not sure...

I, for instance, like the keyboard ''feeling'' very much. As said in the upper posts, practice is vital to get results and also getting to know how the car reacts to your style of driving and adapting the style to the car if needed...
I'm currently only a second off the wr in demo and there are even faster keyboarders out there...I find the mouse a bit tricky and can't drive as agressively as with a keyboard. The mouse steering is a specific thing and requires spot on accuracy to get the fastest times i guess...

Yes, i've been playing a bit with the settings yeterday as advised. Changing the toe in, steering lock and tried the mouse again, but just don't get the best feeling using the mouse...Maybe it's because i've been playing racing games using a keyboard since i can remember...Oh, yes, i used a joystick about ten and more years ago, when my father had an Atari 1024 computer and at some friends' commodores playing winter olympics hitting those buttons and abusing the stick.. Those were some special times.... Had some really great games for that time... I can remember a formula racing game i enjoyed, it was called vroom, i think.

Well, i guess i can still get about 3-4 tenths off of my pb on a perfect lap, although i'm very sattisfied with the current pb, but need to practice a bit more and if i can do it with a keyboard which suits me really well, then i'll stick to that for a while...

Really appreciate your help though...Thanks again
throttle cut on upshift...

Quote from Clownpaint :You've probably already been told this, but under options > player turn off "throttle cut on upshift". That might be causing you to lose speed on the straight.

PS. S2 Full and a Wheel, you won't look back.

Thanks, Clownpaint . That was indeed causing the loss of peak speed...
After turning it off yesterday i managed to get a pb rightaway.
My pb now at 1:32.68 and i'm quite glad about it. It's almost 0.5 seconds off my old pb. It really made the difference... . Need some training though to constantly hit the 32s. I had a bad day yesterday, but this result put me in a better mood...

Quote from Funnybear :I worked out how to do the demo thing. I knew it all along, just wasn't thinking proper like.

Well, I'll have a sniff around fusion. Maybe see you there.

But mate, if you are really into this LFS thing, upgrade yourself to the S2. It is worth it . . .

best £24 quids entertainment I have bought for a long time and it's still kicking deriere. . . .

Gonna do that (buy a license)surely. But i'll have to do it via moneybooker, since i don't have a credit card yet... Is this 100% safe ? Many young guys who don't have a credit card have surely done it this way...Well, just wanna make sure... Don't earn ''bling, bling'' cash so, i guess nothing to be worried about. Maybe opening a new account only for this matter...Just not too confident with this internet money transfers...

Ok Funnybear, very likely to find me there late friday, saturday and sunday...

Quote from Funnybear :Mate, mousing isn't easy. Espiaclly as the LFS is geared for Wheel users (Quite rightly so).

If you are using the K/B to acc and brake can I assume you are using an auto box? if so, don't. Lol. Use the mouse for your steering, acc. and brake. And get used to manual shifting. It's will knock seconds of your times. Engine braking is a major factor in corner entry, you need to learn how to exploit it . . .

If you tell what server your on, I'll come find you and discuss setups. Can I still get on Demo servers?

Auto-shift not a ''yes, please'' option for me anymore...
Like i said, i've been racing lfs with a keyboard for two weeks, but just can't brake 1:33 and just miss the fastest drivers. I tried the mouse thing yesterday and used the mouse for steering and shifting. Also tried to use it for acc/brake but clicking the mouse just seemed a bit funny to me...
I'm usually online during the weekends due to not having internet at home yet... Mostly fusion...I tried the rallycross yesterday, but encountered only fools crashing...I was talking to a licensed guy yesterday and he said he was joining demo servers now and then, so this should mean you can join a demo server...I assume you were only kidding...

''Rooble''-3rd day, under 33 . This is some achievement...Congrats..
Very helpful post

Quote from Funnybear : If you are in the habit of using other people set ups then bare in mind that they are predominatly for wheel users. These setups are often highly unstable and just unusable for a mouser. Increasing rear wheel toe in (Espeacially in Rear wheel drive cars) will compensate for the fact that you can't graduate the throttle like pedal users can, allowing you to get the power down without the rear stepping out like a slippery slidy snake hipped pole dancer.

I was assuming that's what's happening in my case...I realise i can't drive through turns at a constant speed by using keys to accelerate and that's the main ''problem'' i'm facing. Gotta be very couscious with the throttle...Brake earlier...That's where i'm loosing time in comparison with wheelers. Every kmh counts, i know. I managed to go a couple of kmh faster through the last turn with the mouse last night (about 114kmh), almost as fast as the fastest racers...There are still issues about the gear ratio...I'm constantly a couple of kmh behind coming into the straight and over the finish line. Gotta change that a bit also..

Thanks, Funnybear for helping me out. You guys are really generous in helping newcomers like me. Didn't expect to get that much help... .

I've been a demo racer myself and in two weeks of lfs racing i've experienced these silly crashers and racers still reaching under 1:40 too. But since i reached the low 33s( 1:33) i can be quite competitive on the fusion demo server, even get a win here and there...
Fusion is indeed the fastest server and most of the time free of silly crashers, just pure racing and mostly nice guys...
I'm a keyboarder, but yesterday i tried the mouse steering. Tricky thing...
Gotta be gentle...Only managed 33.9. I was suggested to use the mouse to reach the 32s, but still need a bit of practice to master the mouse steering...
Lfs has kept me enjoying the game more than any other...Great racing experience.

Quote from HugeF1 :Hi, I am having trouble setting up the graphics, so this game will run smoothly on my machine.
First of all my specs

1.5 GHz
768MB Ram
Radeon 9600 Pro

When I run on my own, with the default graphics setup, the FPS is about 30-40. When I add even one AI car or a mate online, then the FPS drops to 5-10 and it's impossible to play. I have tried reducing all the details to 0 but it doesn't seem to have any real effect. Another thing, what does LOD stand for? It doesn't seem to make any difference if I change
User LOD, Dust LOD or Mirror LOD.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, HugeF1.

I see you have the same graphics adapter as i do (ati 9600pro).
Do you play gtr,gtl too? If you do, do you have any problems in the menu of the game? Mine locks and i have to reboot the pc.I was checking the forums for any help on this matter and it seems as there's a problem with ati cards playing these two games...
If you do and if you solved the problem(if you had one) please let me know what to do.

Thanks

Jan
