Basically I want to get a feeling for how many people are typing in the names directly in the Join Game Screen.

Since server names are often complicated and lengthy, this is not my favourite choice.
How do you connect to a server? (Vote)

Hi Folks.

I would like to know, how do you connect to server?

By clicking in the server list? By using Join2LFS links? By searching a mate ingame? By directly typing in the server name?

A will set up a vote shortly ...

I don't know if this here is a bug report or an improvement suggestion. I think it's not like it should be and easy to fix, so I post it here (I hope it hasn't been suggested anywhere else. If so, I apologise):

In qualifying, when drivers change their ingame names, they will appear multiple times in the qualifying list.

Does this make sense at all?

But I'm not half as geeky as some of my colleagues are. In fact, in general theoretical physicists are quite normal people, thinking about strange things. I have a wife and a daughter ... does this mean I'm not 100% geeky?

I don't know. But who cares.

btw for engineers its j ... i is a current

Geek! It's blasphemism to use j. It's the imaginary unit, not the jmaginary unit.

BTW: Theoretical Physicist here (pretty geeky, isn't it? :schwitz.

Quote from sgt.flippy :Uhm, it doesn't say it's origin comes from Geck, and it doesn't say either it comes from german. It comes from germanIC, after that it says it comes from the DUTCH word "gek", which is used in dutch as "crazy".

Since all european languages are originated in the same language (indo-european or whatever), obviously the dutch "gek" is just the same word as the old german or germanic "geck". And they also have the same meaning as far as I can see.

So who cares ... it's all the same.

@Shotglass: I've got something for you: exp(i*Pi) = -1.
Clearly one of the most remarkable formulae in science. Is this geeky or what?

Quote from nesrulz :Sometimes, i still get "DI : FFDevice - DIERR_HANDLEEXISTS" message.

Me too, in U27. And once I had a black screen (which I never had before), but couldn't reproduce it yet.

@zeugnimod: I wouldn't wonder if "jeck" and "geck" also have the same origin.

@Electrik Kar: That's exactly what I'm thinking.

Really? So a "Geck" is basically someone that is dressed up like a clown IMHO. Or acting like one, something that one could call an "eitler Geck".

Interesting to read the word "geek" is originated from the german word "Geck", which is rather seldomly used in normal conversation nowadays.

Here's the link to the LEO translation of "Geck" back to english.

EDIT:

@Jakg: I know how to start Mathematica and compute Pi up to thousands of digits.

I think, nowadays, playing computer games becomes more and more commonly accepted. Nevertheless, I told many people what I'm doing in my spare time, and they always get that strange look in their eyes ...

So I think there's still a long way to go. But I'm self-confident enough, that I don't really care what others think about my hobby, as long as my wife doesn't get that strange look in her eyes.

And my little daughter (~ 20 months) likes LFS and my steering wheel, too. Maybe she'll become a great driver until S3 will be out in 201x

Just copy the whole folder. You most likely will have to unlock it, after putting it back into the newly installed system.

EDIT: Damn, second.

Quote from Dajmin :Two other things to remember about LFS:

1. It's not finished yet. This is a public alpha, so more people will find it as time goes by.

2. It's an independant project. The Scavier team can't possibly hope to compete in marketing terms with a company the size of (for example Battlefield 2) EA.

3. There will be hundreds of players online in 2008 and beyond, whereas 30 or less in BF2 by that time ...

Do they have a homepage, or at least a forum? How do you guys communicate in your team?

Quote from csurdongulos :
We could have made setup uploading open for the whole community, but that would have only resulted in 100's of crap setups uploaded for each combo and only 4-5 really useful ones.
Nevertheless I still support the idea to give upload rights to people who feel they are creating good and useful setups, but you have to understand that this can only be open for a selected and small number of individuals, who have a good reputation in sim racing/LFS.

I totally agree with you. I think Team Inferno's setup field is fine just as it is now. Let the fast guys upload setups, so everyone knows what he can get from the setup field. And with this setup station an D34N0 new project, there surely will be other sites on the web, where one can download sets for multiple purposes. I guess there will be a healthy competition between those sites , but team inferno's setup site will always be no. 1 for WR-Sets.

@D34N0: I already knew you're working on something new. Just take your time and I'm sure at the end all will be working great. And you can count me in for Beta testing (but maybe an option to import setups from this project will be a good idea ... ).

What counts IMHO is the quality of the setups that can be loaded from inferno's site. And here I have to say that they are often hard to drive and only good for hotlapping.

But they are also a good starting point for the creation of own (race) setups. So the setup-field from inferno is really an important part of LFS!

And here's where this really fantastic setup station is needed, in order to share easy-to-drive and long-lasting setups for races.

For those who are able to understand german, I can recommend to take a look at our club's setup station. There are already some nice, non-inferno setups which may be worth a try.

Well, I don't know if it helps, but at the moment we have some servers running the 4 combo's MRT @ FE Gold + Reversed and (XFR + UFR) @ SO Classic + Reversed. I will check it tonight, that these 4 combos are running at the servers

*.german-gamers-club.de

where * stands for hot, mdd, rsm and www (basically the tags of different teams in the GGC, except for www of course).

MRT @ FE Green will be 10 lap races with mandatory pit stops. The SO Classic servers will run 20 lap races with mandatory pit stop.

These combos will be there at least until sunday, because they are used for practice for an internal club event in the GGC.

Feel free to race on these servers, you will surely meet some of us there this week. And we need guys to practice with.

There are some public TS servers. In germany we have the 4Players TS Server where plenty of teams have a channel. I don't know about the english community, but there must be something somewhere.

Besides from that, many teams have their own TS2 servers running. So you can also run a litte server yourself, I guess. Just while you are playing.

[ad]A little ad for the german speaking LFS-Community: The german gamers club (GGC) (see my sig) is a lovely place for german racers or teams to find friends to race with. We have a 1000 slot TS2 Server running. Please note that the GGC is no clan, but rather a club. All members just want to play together and have fun. Membership is free. [/ad]

I have the gutsy feeling that yesterday's massive disconnect had something to do with different racers and the server using different patch levels of LFS.

These dc's happen a bit too often in the last two weeks. Since when do we have U21 and U22? Aren't they considered to be buggy at the moment? (Otherwise, Scawen would clearly edit his 1st post in the Patch Thread).
