had pc troubles myself.. unlocked LFS last night, was working fine.
At some point my pc crashed... thought nothing of it.
Went to play LFS today... unlocked
and ive used all my unlocks this month...

Emailed the devs through liveforspeed.net
hopefully i can obtain another unlock.

gfx card brand? graphics memory (shared with system ram)
computer ram?
when does LFS crash? mid race? title screen? doesnt load at all?

First thing to do, if he hasnt already, is download and install updated drivers for all his pc components (motherboard, sound and vid).

I did and am having fun with it.

I see a lot of threads around bagging out the sound in GTR/GTL....
Im actually a big fan of the engine sound, maybe im not as picky as you guys.
*shrug*

I also own GTR and think its rubbish.

You prolly have drivers for various things floating around everywhere causing conflicts.
Once you are satisfied you have disabled your onboard sound through the bios, I would format your PC.
A re-install of Windows might just fix your problem.

if the server is created off your personal internet connection, you wont see it when LFS refreshes the server list.
you will see it via LFSworld tho...

CPU is a must for LFS (most games really)...

Grab the fastest P4 you can afford and wack that in.
You will be amazed!

Have you tried turning on AA and/or AF in your graphics card settings?
While this isnt the cause of the problem, it *might* slow the game down to a playable level?
