Hi!

Let me introduce my little love project I've been working on for quite a while now. 100% my work, including every poly of the model. Currently it is only the street version, but a cup and a hillclimb version is already in developement aswell. Hope you'll love it as much as I do for more than a decade now.

I've been building it for quite a while now, originally for BeamNG, thats why it had to be so detailed, but the second LFS has started supporting mods, it was a no brainer to take a break with that project and build it here beforehand, since IMO this is the best platform to make such a small car fun and lively.

In the images you can see parts of the full scanned data of the car aswell, which was my guide during the modeling process of the exterior and interior aswell.

According to the editor the current state has 58399 tris, which would roughly stay the same even after I finish everything.

It is in the hands of the devs now, hopefully they will have time for it during the weekend.
I think I've managed to dial in the physics pretty good, I'm quite satisfied with it.

I'm so happy to see this warm welcome.
The first little update is out with the followings:

Version 2

- tweaked suspension geometry
- added textures for interior labels
- fixed badly oriented fuel and water gauges
- added color variants
- wheels can now be colored aswell
- less agressive limited slip differential (trying to balance it)

If you have any suggestions on what should be fixed or improved, feel free to tell me. Have fun!

Just out of curiosity, how does scanning actually work? I see you've used a Kinect to do it, obviously there is a need for a specific software but i'm kinda interested in the process of that, seeing as i have a useless kinect laying around too

The car felt great when i tried it, didn't test it too throughout but it wasn't too bad driving in the autocross LX week layouts. Maybe steering ratio felt a bit too high(as in unsensitive) but you propably know better what ratio this thing should have than me

I've used a software called Skanect with the Kinect scanner to create the guide mesh, which is insanely high poly, even editing it feels like slow motion.



I have about 20-25 similar scans of the car, each containing different parts of it (spliting it makes the editing process easier). Once I stich them together the modeling process can begin. I already had one version in a pretty advanced state when I heard about the scanning, it seemed easier to start the whole model again from the ground up, but I was so much more confident about the precision of my work, so I went further and further in the details. We are talking about years here, still missing a lot for my eyes, but even the majority of the existing details/parts needed to be excluded for this LFS project.

Great mod, nice and detailed and fun to drive! My only suggestions would be to fix rear light indicators and if at all possible, a RHD option (currently LHD only )

I just realised that using an image texture for the side indicators messes up the other indicators, even though they are on a different cutout. Temporarily fixed by removing that texture.

RHD is in the short-term plans.

Hello, Tomsteel! Really like where this mod is headed and decided to edit the rims and add a logo - it's fake, based on the name Swirl, I hope you like the changes - and if you do, you will find them attached below.

SWR_logo.png -> LFS_EDITOR\data\png

Inside the Swirl wheels.zip:

Swirl Sport 06.spk -> LFS_EDITOR\data\3dob
Swirl Sport 06.whl -> LFS_EDITOR\data\whl

You can load them from LOAD WHL -> Swirl Sport 06.whl (in the wheel object screen) or

Looks good, but the steering animation is very bad, it stops before full lock, often doesnt actually hold the wheel, etc

Thank you for your effort, the idea of the two tone paint for the rims seems to be a good addition, the wheels definitely need some tweaking regardless.

I am not sure about the logo, I intentionally did not use any replacement for the original one, I think its better the leave the fantasy working rather than trying to force it into a direction.

Thanks for noticing it, animation editing is one of those things I didn't want to hold the project with in this early stage by trying to figure out how the editor works.

Skin templates and licence plates are done, fixed the indicators, once I fix the steering animation an update will be released. After that I'll start working on the right-hand drive variant for the following update.

Thanks, it seems like its not possible to form the rim shape in a way as the spoke design would require, hence the intersecting on the outside. It is ok for now, but I will be experimenting with it later.

I managed to customize the steering animation for the 1080deg rotation, the animation editor is pretty impressive overall.

I had to detach the whole gauge object into subobject so it can display correctly both right and left hand drive configurations. Check out the RB4 GT in the Editor - it's done this way.

The indentation (shown on the image) for the starter switch and the 12V connector are the two things I was not able to solve, they would require a totally different mesh on the right side.

Sure, but I made it like this intentionally. Applying any decals for example on the side, it would look strange if the gaps would be painted aswell. For a full coloring like on your picture I found it easier to tweak the sliders for the body color rather than painting it on the skin, but I might be wrong, so please correct me if so.

Just uploaded a new version where the mirrors and the spoiler can be colored separately.

Keeping the gaps body coloured is reducing opportunities for skinners, even a simple two tone scheme is sadly looking weird due to it.
Anything placed on a skin can easily be made to fit around the gaps (it only takes a second to make a mask layer).
I genuinely think more complex skins (like racing painjobs) would suffer from that; I hope you see my point.

You are totally right, wireframe mask can help to leave the gaps unchanged if needed. I'll fix this in the next update, thank you for reporting it!

You could maybe assign these edges to a mapping that does not have a texture and paint that mapping matte black, in my opinion it looks good enough with and without skins (picture as an example of my own mappings, there are no edges in the skinfile)

Thanks for your advice, that was my original plan too, but I didn't like the lack of reflections on the edges.

I've used Xbox360 Kinect for scanning, it provided plenty of details. They are quite cheap for how much tech they have inside. An additional adapter cable is needed for pc connection, plus a software like Skanect, which I used.

I don't know if you do it already, but for those edges/seams, you can mark the inner points as "dark" in the modeller, then the surrounding triangles will still use the original mapping colour but they will appear darker.

Totally missed that feature, adds a great bit of depth to the gaps, thanks! I've already attached those edges back to thier neighbouring panels, it perfectly darkens the skin color in those areas.

Awesome Had to slightly update my skin to fit the new template, but it looks so good now!

The driving characteristics are as you’d expect a fwd hot hatch to be Its handling is beginner friendly but takes some more to get the most performance out of it, which I like. So there’s always that bit more performance to gain and push yourself to do better.

Now I’m hoping for a ‘cup’ version, externally it looks the part already, but on the interior it could use a racing seat and digital racing dash (like some of the GT’s have) and of course a roll cage But I’d still be happy even if the ‘trackday’ version is as ‘racing’ as it’ll get

I'm so proud of it.
That is exactly how I intended to tune the characteristics, just as you described. Eventhough a lot of the parameters are real life datas, there can be major differences in driving feel between iterations, regardless how similar numeric parameters like COG or F/R weight destribution are.
I've already uploaded an early private version of the "cup" project in order to test it with my friend Joe87. I had to upload it as a different vehicle because of all the fundamental modifications compared to the current one. It will have all the goodies you mentioned. I have a lot of modeling to do in the interior, during that process Joe87 will be able to figure out a great baseline setup. The "trackday" interior needs some texturing aswell on the floorpanel (indentations, holes), maybe a better fabric on the seats and roof, I need to address that first.

The update feels great Definitely more planted and improved stability, also during braking, although it still tries to kill you if you don’t brake in a straight line haha but that’s typical fwd car behavior.
Even though it tries to kill you sometimes when not braking in a straight line, it’s still quite predictable and allows you to use it to turn the car into the corner, almost a bit like “backing in” to a corner like you’d see on a supermoto I’ve knocked off about a second off of my lap time around Westhill int.

I did notice this little 'glitch'(?) in the side mirrors, it looks like something pokes through the mirror surface...

I noticed that instability under braking, moving the brake balance forward a bit helps, 74% seems to be the sweetspot to maintain that turn in ability while stabilizing it. I'll change it to 74% in both default configs if you agree on that.

That glitch in mirror is a known clipping issue, there is nothing I can do about it as far as I know.

It is my pleasure to see the warm welcome here, I would try to achieve my goals with it anyway but sharing makes the whole process more exciting, seeing you guys pushing it to its limits is awesome.

I don't think the devs need any external help in a form of 3d models, it shows too much similarities with the real thing aswell, which would make the licencing stuff tricky.

About the Cup version, imho if you want to keep realistic the car, don't go over 150 hp, because the real one needs stuff like cams/headers/intake and ECU reprog to reach this kind of power. 160 hp if you want to exagerate.
RPM max at 7800/8000 (stock pistons are forged and they can handle higher RPMS than stock)

The stock ECU can't handle powers over 160hp, and you need to replace it with an aftermarket one (for installing Rotrex kit, Turbo Kit or the rarest M19 NA kit)

If you need some informations about the real car, feel free to ask, you are doing a great job and is really nice to see this underrated FWD funny car on LFS.

Nice mod!

I've noticed 2 issues: custom skins don't work in LOD2 and LOD3 and you might want to get rid of the remnants of the badge in the front mesh or at least change the shape.

I've come to the same conclusion about the engine details with a slightly lower rev limiter (7500rpm), but I have the temptation to raise it to about 8000.

Thanks for reporting them! I'm aware that the LODs are not using the skin, I didn't think it was that important since they are only used in the distance, but I'll fix it in the next update.

I purposly placed the background of the badge back, it felt empty without it. The shape is obviously showing some resemblance with the original logo, but it is just a simple geometry without any copyrighted details.

To be honest i did not notice it much while racing, but in the replays it's quite jarring when cars suddenly change to white in the distance

Sure, I have plans in terms of the visuals aswell, but I decided to wait for the new graphics engine and hopefully a more polished editor to be released in order to avoid wasting time for temporary solutions in regards of texturing.

This is a great mod!

I'm wondering is it normal brake calipers to be attached to the suspension parts?
Especially the rear caliper, which is moving with the trailing arm suspension. Front is OK, because it is a brake object.

Also I think front/rear lights parts are a bit too reflective.

Same goes for the cup version.

Hi! Thanks for your suggestions! The rear caliper suppose to move/rotate with the trailing arm since it is attached to it, but as a "brake object" it does not roate at all, so I found it more realistic to merge them together.

Do we have a better solution for the front strut?

Hello! I haven't done any research but I don't think calipers are supposed to move with the trailing arms.
Making it as separate brake object would be better.

I don't see a problem with the front strut thought.

EDIT: A better solution could be separating the strut as mudguard object and the caliper as brake object.

Using "mudguard" for the front strut could be the technically correct method, thanks for the tip, but I can't see any real advantages. (the only thing that bothers me with the current state is how ugly it looks when driving from wheel camera, sadly mudguards are visible there too)
