I haven't edited an LFS screenshot for a very long time. These competitions were always a lot of fun. I think that they would only work if we can get a solid number of entries and have someone who is willing to run the competitions regularly.
I'm not entirely sure, I never played much DS1. There are a lot of branching paths but you'll quickly learn if it's the right area for your level. I went the wrong way at the very beginning and learnt very quickly that I wasn't powerful enough, but once I got to the lower leveled area I found my way pretty quickly and I haven't felt lost or felt like an area is too hard for me since then.
S-Tuner is a browser based car configurator/builder thing made by a one man team, and it's totally free.
It's mainly based around S-Chassis Nissans (as the name might suggest), but there is also the following sites, made by the same person which allow you to modify Holdens and aussie Fords if you're not a Nissan fan.
I found out why the Hudson in game wasn't driving the way I expected it to - Gran Turismo seems to have an annoying habit of setting traction control to 5 every time you get in a new car, I turned it off and managed to gain 3 seconds on my original time haha :P
