Four S3 responses in the one afternoon is also an excellent indicator of community health.

My gaming time for the evening has started, time to try Rockingham!

Hi all,

I've had LFS since 2012 (maybe earlier) and upgraded to S2 in 2013. I haven't really played since then as I was lured away by iRacing at around that time.

I'd forgotten LFS existed until a vid popped up in my youtube feed today so I'm happily downloading and am very, VERY excited to see that development has continued (I'll upgrade to S3 when I can).

Just wondering what's changed since 2013... not asking for 6 years of patch logs, but more for broad strokes of where the game is at now (and what the hosting scene is like, particularly for Australia).

Cheers and happy driving Smile

Quote from JJ72 :sorry what should I press in the intro video? it doesn't seem to response to any of my input?

Enter.

Quote from lukelfs :Mmm, well Nvidia released SLi Pack 2, which included support for NFS Shift , Il try disabling it and try

Edit- I set NFS Shift to Single GPU, and the game ran for a bit, Couldnt tell if it worked, then it crashed :S

Edit2- Set it back to Nvidia Recommended, and the game still crashes , Cant play anymore lol...

Dude, what the hell are you running in SLI? That's a strange beast you've got there my friend!

Wow.. reading the first two pages and the last two pages of this thread is... just...

Haven't noticed that lag myself, will check it out.

Game is ridiculously hard past tier 3 by the way. One on one challenges are just insane and some of the special rounds (like the lovely vehicle below) are just too much.

That said, this game is EXCELLENT online against friends. If you join random servers you'll get random people.. main problem is people with all arcade elements on can race with all sim element drivers. And what kind of behaviour do you expect from an auto-driver with the racing line and traction control...? Exactly.

But, start a ranked server, limit the slots and quickly invite your friends... it's a blast. Been up all night racing against mates and before too long everyone has their eye in leading to some pretty hairy laps. Do recommend from that perspective.

But yes, I find myself heading back to rFactor-Historix and a bit of LFS when I want to get the feel for a real car.

Some really great comments in the thread from everyone, cheers for your input!

I wonder about the physics though... at low speeds I agree, it doesn't feel quite right... but have any of us taken corners at 200kmh in any of these vehicles? Do we really know that the same sensation you get at 100km evenly extrapolates to higher speeds... or are we, as I feel, comparing sims against other sims... rather than sims against real life against other sims?

I do recommend you play with no HUD, no assists and hard AI... it's really goddamned difficult and even staying on the track is a chore... but ultimately, at the end of the day, it's an absolute blast. I just wish it had the track choice of ToCa 3!

It's a racing-sim forum?

Take it for what it is imo... a half-sim, half-arcade ball-tearing blast of a racer.

Ahhh yes, tier 1 races suck.

We mustn't be playing the same game then. It's very easy to lose grip and most corners are an exercise in keep your arse in check.

At low speeds, not realistic... at high speeds, more realistic than LFS or rFactor-mods.

EDIT: yes it supports H-shifter.

2ND EDIT: it's the best of all the NFS games ever released and it's sim enough to please all but the most hardcore of fans (so, those of you who hate on rFactor base-install and think LFS is superior because "omg it's only in alpha" and have never played Historix or TCL, you won't like it).
NFS Shift - released yesterday!

Woot, Australian retail got to match the American release date instead of the 24th.

And I have to say it's a fantastic game.. what impresses me most is that at great speed the road really starts to have an effect. In all these other sims I now play (rFactor, Live for Speed and arcade-sims like ToCa 3) you never really get the sense of having to fight anything but the car... but in Shift you can very well hit a part of the road wrong and end up in a fence.

here's some of my more excited posts from other forums...

__________________________________________________________________

First thing I gotta do is remove all the HUD ****.

Right, not very sim-like... far too much arseing around corners. But.... OH MY GOD THE SPEED.

The gamespot review is right, you get worried about how fast you're going.

Shots without any HUD at all. Shame of it is, you can't see how fast you're going nor what revs you're on (although the sound effects do a great job of letting you know that last one).

Here's some high-speed Nordschleise action...

Spa.. what a wicked track...

BTW: GAME IS HARD. Hotdamn, with the racing line off, zero assists, AI on hard and full damage this is an absolute bastard of a game. Yay!

What an addictive game! I'm level 10 now and forcing myself to think about going to bed. You can earn career points by being a clean driver or by being an aggressive one. Use someone else's car as a brake on a corner, get some points... drive a clean line on a corner or overtake without touching, get some points... depending on which method you favour, you'll receive either hotlap challenges or last man standing challenges.

Just brilliant this game, love it.

Here's me finally winning Laguna Seca on tier 2 after getting smashed out of contention by the AI six goes in a row...

Photo Mode uploads directly to the NFS website... how ridiculous to give you this mode and then not allow you to pose your own for your own pleasure. Retards ahoy.

And just a taste of the lovely menu screens...

I'm not an idiot!

For driving it's learning the rhythm of using the clutch, for flying it's learning the equipment. I know that actually experiencing it irl is going to be a vastly different and nuanced beast.

I've only recently come across both rFactor and LFS... for what very little it's worth, here's my experiences.

rFactor;

* has tonnes of mods, most of which are crap
* has tonnes of mods, some of which give you a whole new game to play with...
- the Historix mod is brilliant, great physics, great car selection
- CTDP F1 mod is the best f1 racing you can have... screaming around Albert Park in a McLarens has never felt so tight
- Touring Car Legends mod is outstanding, nothing beats thrashing Bathurst's Big Dipper in a Holden

Live for Speed;

* realistic clutch!
* realistic clutch!
* feels like an improved version of GTR5p, devs have done an excellent job of modelling the true physics of a modern car
* realistic engine/gearbox damage! Unlike rFactor, I get punished for driving like a tool rather than just loosening my handling on the 25th lap
* not anywhere near enough cars or tracks, haven't read the forum enough but am assuming the community is not mod-friendly?

rFactor wins only by virtue of the massive modding community out in support of it, but it's a cheap win... because LFS is FAR more realistic and satisfying when you complete a race.

All up, couldn't do without either of them and until something comes along (like rFactor 2) that tops both I'll keep on spinning my wheels

EDIT: Just read up the page... not sure what the policy is on external links here, but I'm in a solid league with XGN (Xtreme Gamers Network) in Australia. Wednesday night alternates between Touring Car Legends and Historix and Thursday is the Porsche Carerra Cup. Brilliant league with some top-class drivers.

NB: to play the historix mod you need the GTR 2 disc (it's the modders way of saying thanks to the old SimBin team as they've taken a lot of the aesthetics from the GTR2 release).

I learnt to drive with the G25. As a 32 year old who never wanted to drive, I could never understand the relationship of the clutch, the gears, the revs and the brake and accelerator.

Now, I'm ready to finally have a solid crack at my license and I reckon it will be a no-brainer... it all clicked after years of watching other people drive, my feet automatically knew what to do!

Now, when I have my license, I can finally take the pilot's lessons that I've always wanted... and what's especially amusing is that I've learnt to properly fly a Cessna using FSX.

Geek ftw!

Hi everyone... new racer-fan here. I'm a 32 year old professional who can't actually drive in real life (I've never wanted to) but after discovering rFactor and a G25 I discovered my feet automatically knew how to clutch!

A clanmate (brat81) convinced me to try LFS... and I'm really stoked I did. rFactor has some brilliant mods for it, but none of them come close to the clutch-action in LFS. Both are brilliant games and once NFS Shift disappoints me at the end of the month I'll keep an eye out for a casual LFS league.

Wish there were more Aussie servers though!
