\sel_master
A master server is a special program running on a computer on the internet. It holds a list of games that are currently running and allows you to start or connect to online games.

Normally we run two master servers. You can use whichever master you like, but usually the primary server is the one to use except in the case of internet problems or any other kind of problem affecting the primary master server. The secondary master server is intended as a backup. The IP addresses sometimes change and the current ones can can be found online at :

\con_wind
This is a precaution for two possible situations that can arise on some computers when running a game in full-screen mode.

1) If you are running a personal firewall, it may bring up a warning message when you try to start or connect to an online game.

2) Some computers may bring up a connection dialog box when you try to access the internet.

These messages can cause some computers to lock up if the game is running full-screen, so this option makes the game go temporarily into a window while connecting.

If your computer does not bring up any messages when connecting then you can safely turn off this option.
\host_pw
Some hosts are set up to require a password, and are known as private hosts.

If you are connecting to a private host, you must enter the password in this box.

Public hosts do not require a password.
\game_nm
Public game - enter a name in the box to give your game an identity on the internet.

Private game - the name allows your friends to find you without needing your IP address.
\ip_name
You can connect to a specific game either by using an IP address or a game name.

1) The IP address directly identifies the computer on which the game is hosted.

2) A name search uses a list of games on the master server to find the IP address.
\host_ip
You can connect to a game hosted on a particular computer on the internet.

The IP address is a unique number assigned to every computer connected to the internet.

It is written as 4 numbers separated by 3 full stops.

Click on the button and type in the IP address of the computer you want to join.

Two ways to find out the IP address of a PC :

1) Run WINIPCFG from the start menu.
2) Run IPCONFIG from a DOS prompt.
\host_port
When connecting directly by IP address, you need to know the IP address and the port that the host is using.

It may use the default port 63392 or some other port number chosen by the person running the host.

It will be either the default value or a high number less than 65536.
\host_nm
You can connect to a game hosted on a particular computer on the internet.

To search for a game by name instead of using the IP address, enter its name in the box.

Game names allow you to arrange to meet a friend online even if you don't know what the IP address will be.
\game_pw
You may host a private game by entering a password in the box.

To host a public game, leave the box blank.
\master_ip
The IP address of the master server sometimes changes and can be found at :

      ^7www.liveforspeed.net^8

Please click on the button and enter the IP address as 4 numbers separated by 3 full stops.

The master server is a special program running on a computer on the internet. It holds a list of games that are currently running and allows you to start or connect to online games.

1) If you require a list of games to join, the list will come from the master server.

2) If you search for a specific game by name, the search will go through the master server.

3) If you start a new game you have the option of notifying the master server, in which case your game will be added to the list, to allow other players to join your game.
\use_master
Options :

^7Off^8 - your game will not connect to the master server. Other players can only connect by clicking on "Join specific game" and typing in the IP address of your computer.

^7On^8 - the game will connect to the master server and appear on the public list of games.

^7Hidden^8 - your game will connect but will not appear on the list of games. Other players may connect to your game by clicking on "Join specific game" and typing in your game's name.

Note : If your computer is connected indirectly to the internet through internet connection sharing or a business network with a firewall, no-one will be able to connect to you through the master server. If you run a host on your network, only computers on your network will be able to connect to you, by using the host's ip address. In this case there is no point in using the master server.
\game_port
You can select which TCP port you want your host to use. This can allow more than one LFS dedicated host to run on a single computer.

Use the default value 63392 or choose a high number less than 65536.
\master_help
The program was unable to connect to the master server.

This could be for various reasons:

1) The master server IP address may have changed.
2) The master server IP address may not have been entered correctly.
3) The master server may not be running.
4) If you are protected by a firewall it may have blocked the connection.

Please check the status and IP address of the master server at :

      ^7www.liveforspeed.net^8

More information about the master server can be found by clicking the help button next to the master server IP address button on the multiplayer screen.
\first_tips
Press the Esc key in the game or setup screen to bring up a list of options.

Press the T key to type a text message in a multiplayer game.

Graphics or frame rate problems can often be improved by changing graphics options.

Use of a force feedback steering wheel is recommended.

Use your brakes in good time when you are approaching a corner...
\modem_type
Your computer's ability to run a host with several players depends on your upload bandwidth. This in turn depends on your type of modem and the speed of service provided by your internet service provider.

Please select your type of modem or select a "custom" modem and manually enter the upload bandwith in kilobits per second (Kbits is a commonly used measurement of digital communication speeds).

^7Predefined modem types :^8

- phone line modem : 56 Kbit
- cable modem : 512 Kbit download / 128 Kbit upload
- cable modem : 1 Mbit download / 256 Kbit upload
\upload_bw
If your modem is not one of the predefined types please manually enter your upload bandwidth in kilobits per second (Kbits/s). If you don't know your upload speed in Kbits/s but you know it in Kbytes/s, please multiply by 9 to convert to Kbits. Communication protocols use approximately 9 bits to send each byte.

This setting helps you to choose your host settings in such a way that you will not exceed this bandwidth.
\max_guests
You can set the number of computers that will be able to link up on your host.

Minimum setting: 1 - only one player will be able to join your host.
Maximum setting: 11

This number is very important in determining your upload bandwidth requirement.
\max_cars
You can set the number of cars that will be able to race.

This includes real and ai drivers.

Minimum setting: 1 - only one car will be allowed in a race.
Maximum setting: 12

This number is very important in determining your upload bandwidth requirement.
\guest_cars
You can set the number of cars that each guest can add to a race.

This includes real and ai drivers.

Minimum setting: 0 - guests can watch but not join the race.
Maximum setting: 3 - up to 3 ai drivers or 1 real and 2 ai per guest.
\host_cars
You can set the number of cars that the host can add to a race.

This includes real and ai drivers.

Minimum setting: 0 - host can watch but not join the race.
Maximum setting: 3 - up to 3 ai drivers or 1 real and 2 ai drivers.

Reducing this number can reduce your upload bandwidth requirement.
\max_packs
This is the maximum number of packets sent per second by each car.

Minimum setting: 3 packets per second.
Maximum setting: 6 - smoother / requires double the upload bandwidth / costs cpu.
\ded_host
You can start a game as a normal host or a dedicated host.

^7normal host :^8 You can play the game as in single player mode and other players on the internet will be able to join your game.

^7dedicated host :^8 With no graphics displayed and no physics calculated, you cannot play on the host. This is the best option if you do not wish to play on the host and instead you wish to connect from another computer. You can use a much less powerful pc to run a dedicated host.
